Radeon 9800 pro problems

Here is a problem that is getting more frequent as I go along. It seems to be getting worse and worse...

I've RMA'd the card but has anyone else had this problem? I've tried changing the drivers and rolling them back with no luck.

Card is fried dude.I had a 9700 did the same thing.I Oc'd it a bit too much I guess.Lasted a year tho clocked to a 9800 nearly.

I've RMA'd the card but has anyone else had this problem? I've tried changing the drivers and rolling them back with no luck.

I used to get that until I got a new VGA cooler (Arctic Cooling something or other) and now it works fine. Your video card fan could be messed and not running fast enough. I still occasionally get artifacts but it fixes itself if I restart. If you're overclocking you should probably stop immediately.

Looks like overheating, I had a 9800pro and it wouldn't run BF2 without crashing until i got cooling for it. like unununium said, arctic cooling should do the trick...

Neg.Judging from the amount of texture corruption,it's already too late for that.An excellent way to determine it is too visually look at the tops of the capacitors on the card.If they are domed,get another card.If they are flat,you have a good chance of saving it.

My card had corruption worse than that before I replaced the VGA cooler and it runs fine now. The capacitor check sounds like a good idea, but since you apparently RMA'd it already you can just sit back and relax until your new card arrives (hopefully).

Did you overclock it? Always happens to me when I OC my card. Works fine after a clock speed reset and a system restart.

Make sure you are using a good videocard driver. I have the exact same card and I run everything on medium, except texture filtering is high and AA is X2
Omegadrivers seem to be the best for me.

Hmmmm, I have the same card and run at all medium without any AA. Maybe I should try turning it on and see what happens.

As far as drivers go, I've noticed something weird. Every time I try to update my drivers, it 'breaks' things -- I'm no longer able to play any of my games (BF2, FarCry, HL2, etc) and scrolling in Windows programs (especially Internet Explorer) slows waaaaaay down. But when I roll back to my old driver (which is about a year and a half old!) everything works fine. Any suggestions?

Try using the ATI OMEGA drivers. Fixed all my problems with BF2. I also use a 9800 Pro AIW.

In the BIOS try turning off Fast Write and setting your AGP to 4x instead of the default 8x


It fixed alot of my problems, even the one your posting about and should speed things up a bit without sacrificing any image quality!


If that fails make sure to check your CPU and Motherboard temperatures in the BIOS, usually under 'Hardware Monitor'.

Or,he could goto majorgeeks.com and d/l Everest Home Edition 2.2 for free and it will show him more info than he dared dream.GPU temp/GPU ambient temp,MB temp,Hd temp.GPU cooling fan speed and much much more.A must have for Oc'ing feinds.

I had a problem similar with my card, it was doing this when artillery was falling close to me. I went in my Video Options and selected "2X" in the line (don't how it's named in english), second line up to "distance view" in the options.

Sometimes cleaning the fan works wonders... my friend once thought his GFX card was broken but the glitches were gone after removing tons of dust from the card's fan (it was barely turing anymore).

Thanks for the tips. My PC is about due for its next cleaning anyway, I'll make sure to pay special attention to the GPU fan. I'll also give those BIOS settings a shot and see what happens. As far as drivers go, do most people here prefer the Omega drivers to ATI's Catalyst drivers?
