Seems like AMD sure knows how to build quality CPU's. The latest samples given to www.anandtech.com show improvement over socket 939. The first time they got an engineering sample, AM2 was performing worse than 939, but now it seems to be doing better. It is expected to have a 2% to 7% increased over 939 when it is release.

Great job AMD keep up the good work.

I kind of compare AMD and Intel now like car manufactures, AMD is like German cars few but build with quality, while Intel makes alot but just good enough to get by(Until Conroe that is)

Times sure have changed, Intel isnt exactely lacking quality, but their designs have stagnated and AMD has really engineered what seems to be a universal solution, applying the same technology to servers, laptops and desktops. Intel on the other hand has 3-4 architectures and right now only their mobiles can compete with AMD.


EDIT: in response to the article however, still seems like the initial 90nm AM2's are dogs. Socket 939 owners with the urge to upgrade should hold off until K8L in my opinion.

A 2-7% increase that is not really anything to be happy about.

You would be better off staying with 939 so that you would not have to buy a new mobo, ram, and cpu then wait till K8L.

Is better than no increased for just adding DDR2, look what happen when Intel added DDR2, pretty much nothing??? Unless someone can show me other wise. And that's on the 90nm chips, maybe when they switch over to 65nm it will be around 10%, again the chip architecture is the same, so AMD keeps on refining it. Think about that.

Its really more of a 0% - 5% speed increase. I'm not saying the tests Anand ran are the gold standard of computing but four resulted in a 0% increase, one was negative, and the only bench to break 3.4% was Quake 4 with a 5.5% increase. (read only about 5FPS)

The bandwidth benchmark obviously resulted in an improvement, and the latency is a synthetic test, and it only showed a 7%.



Anyways, none of this is a surprise, AMD is taking current technology and swaping in a DDRII memory controller in place of a standard DDR controller. Nothing more to see here, and I totally agree with the article, current high end socker 939 users have nothing to fear from AM2. 939 will be as obsolete as socket 478 was when 775 was first introduced., or better yet this is almost like socket 423 --> 478. The only benefits lie in the future, not at the intial crossover point.

K8L is where its at, but thats 12+ months away, until then lets watch Conroe smoke AMD for a bit, the good news is that AMD has something to respond with, unlike when the Northwood pushed AMD into the price/performance category, and forced AMD to once again play second fiddle to Intel... until K8 arrived.

You are very very correct.

I still have an old PIII cpu and bord that works only the PSU is shot.

i wish i still had the motherboard for my old 486 that was overclocked by the manufacturers and sold to us as a prototype pentium 1 lol

still got the chip just nothing to run it on.
