Driveclub came out today. I say this in case you weren't yet aware of this fact. You can go to the store and buy it or you can purchase it through the PlayStation Store online.

What you can't do is download the free PlayStation+ Edition of Driveclub that has been promised to consumers for over a year now. Originally, Driveclub was going to be one of the first games offered to PlayStation 4 owners that subscribed to PlayStation+. That obviously never really panned out. After many delays and some not so patient waiting from the community, the release date finally arrived.

It was set to be part of the PlayStation+ offerings for October 2014 and there was much rejoicing. Even better is the fact that it wasn't going to take the place of the games slated to be included in this month's PlayStation+ free offerings.

Well here we are at almost October 8 and there is no PlayStation+ Edition of Driveclub in sight. The other games went up earlier and most had assumed that Driveclub would have been up then as well. It wasn't.

Now, that wouldn't be so bad but neither Sony nor Evolution Studios, the game's developer, are commenting on what is going on. At present, there are over 655 comments on the relevant PlayStation blog entry and not a single one is a status update from either company.

The only things you will see from either Sony or the official Driveclub social channels are... well, not much. The latest from the @AskPlayStation account is from 11 hours ago (at the time of this entry), stating that they are aware of (connectivity) issues with "NBA2K15, Driveclub, and Destiny." That is for the retail release of the game and the online multiplayer component.

What about the generic @PlayStation account? The last few Tweets from them are about DLC for Trials Fusion and retweet about how Geoff Keighley will be hosting the Powers panel at the New York Comic Con.

What about the latest status update on the official Driveclub Facebook page? Only a mention about the online multiplayer issues for the retail version of the game. Maybe their Twitter will have something?

Out of all of the official channels that is the only mention of what's going on and even that is incredibly vague.

You know one thing that would help to appease some angry consumers? Communication. I'm not saying that everybody will be tickled pink to get a few words from an official source, but many would be happy to hear about what's going on.

And this is the problem I have with situations like this, the lack of communication from developers and publishers. Sony and Evolution aren't the first to do this, they just happen to be the latest. Then again, Sony is also guilty of being notoriously quiet on what's going on with their console updates. Remember that mysterious 2.0 firmware update for the PlayStation 4? We haven't heard anything about that since August. Meanwhile, Microsoft has a series of monthly updates in which the beta is open to many members of the community for testing purposes.

Strangely, my disappointment at large with this trend of "keeping quiet" began with Valve. Sure, people want them to spill the beans on Half-Life 3, but it's at least understandable that they haven't yet. However, when there are situations where Steam goes down unexpectedly, it would be nice to see some sort of a status update on social media about what's going on. Even if the information is too sensitive to make public, they could at the very least give people a conservative estimate on when services will be restored.

This is something I have said time and time again about Valve. Even if they made mention in their forums at the start of the unexpected down time, it would probably work wonders. As it is, they almost always say nothing, potentially exacerbating the issue when people begin to go to their forums en masse to voice their outrage or concern.

We are living in a world where you can reach out to millions of people all at once, be it through Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and countless other networks and you can't say one thing to let your current and potential future consumers know what's going on?

Give me a break.
