EA Attempts to Distance Themselves from 'Loot Boxes' by Calling them 'Surprise Mechanics'

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it must be a surprise mechanic.

EA and loot boxes, loot boxes and EA. In some people's minds, there is no better pairing save for "gamers" and "rising up." For the past several years now, the studio has been repeatedly under fire for how they included loot boxes in many of their titles. They have included loot box mechanics in games like Madden with their Madden Ultimate Team card packs, FIFA with the similar Ultimate Team mode, Battlefield 1, and perhaps most notably, Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Xbox One Voted 2014 'Product of the Year' by Parade Magazine

Parade, a free periodical that is included in the Sunday subscriptions for 640 newspapers in the United States, has already tallied up the votes for the entirety of 2014 for their "Product of the Year Awards." No, it's alright that the year is just shy of two months over, there will be no silencing the people! They have declared that the Xbox One is a Product of the Year! The results of who should win this prestigious reward were determined by those who bothered to fill in the limited survey of pre-determined products after the list was narrowed by a "jury of industry professionals." A "panel of 40,000 American shoppers" were then surveyed and the Xbox O...

Blizzard Justifies $60 Price for Level 90 Character Boost

Last week, the price of the automatic Level 90 character boost for World of Warcraft was discovered to be $60 (USD). Today, Blizzard explains and justifies the $60 price to those who are upset that it's "too expensive."

Lead Encounter Designer on WoW, Ion Hazzikostas, explains their position to Eurogamer.
"In terms of the pricing, honestly a big part of that is not wanting to devalue the accomplishment of levelling," Hazzikostas said. "If our goal here was to sell as many boosts as possible, we could halve the price or more than that - make it $10 or something. And then hardly anyone would ever level a character again. "But levell

King Files to Abandon Its Trademark on the Word 'Candy'

Perhaps feeling the heat of the Internet, King is now filing for express abandonment of its trademark on the word "Candy."

The Candy Crush Saga developer confirmed the move to Kotaku.
King has withdrawn its trademark application for Candy in the U.S., which we applied for in February 2013 before we acquired the early rights to Candy Crusher. Each market that King operates in is different with regard to IP. We feel that having the rights to Candy Crusher is the best option for protecting Candy Crush in the U.S. market. This does not affect our E.U. trademark for Candy and we continue to take all appropriate
