EA Attempts to Distance Themselves from 'Loot Boxes' by Calling them 'Surprise Mechanics'

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it must be a surprise mechanic.

EA and loot boxes, loot boxes and EA. In some people's minds, there is no better pairing save for "gamers" and "rising up." For the past several years now, the studio has been repeatedly under fire for how they included loot boxes in many of their titles. They have included loot box mechanics in games like Madden with their Madden Ultimate Team card packs, FIFA with the similar Ultimate Team mode, Battlefield 1, and perhaps most notably, Star Wars Battlefront 2.

In fact,...

  • The Escapist Triples Down on Their Allegations Against Star Citizen and Roberts Space Industries

This news is a continuation of where we left off yesterday in the ongoing battle between The Escapist and Cloud Imperium Games.

Moments ago, The Escapist decided to triple down on their allegations that they are right and that there are some unsavory events going on with Cloud Imperium Games, Roberts Space Industries, and the development of Star Citizen.
The Escapist, notwithstanding Cloud Imperium Games' notice and posting, stands by its coverage of Star Citizen and intends to continue to investigate the developing story. Since publishing our original stories, we have been contacted by, and are currently interviewing,

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Reportedly 45GB on Consoles

Moments ago, the Microsoft Store listed the download size for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. It looks like the game will require about 45GB of storage space on the Xbox One. I would assume that the PlayStation 4 version is also about the same size.

It does not look like the size is still up on the Xbox page, at least for the US store.

  • Far Cry Primal Teased by Ubisoft; Leaked by the Rest of the Internet

Far Cry Primal Teased by Ubisoft; Leaked by the Rest of the Internet

Ubisoft has an annoying lengthy teaser going on leading up to the announcement of a new game. Thanks to a few sites, including IGN Turkey, jumping the gun in a big way, the reveal is already known. The game is Far Cry Primal and it seems as though it will take place during the Ice Age. We're talking about cavemen and crazy mammals. Of course, this also means no dinosaurs.

This seems to be the Far Cry Sigma that was recently added to the Steam database this past week.

If we didn't have these leaks, it could be days before the reveal was fully shown during this unnecessarily long live stream. Seriously, the video below...

  • SOMA Review

    SOMA Review

”Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.” – Dr. Seuss

SOMA takes everything you think you know about what “humanity” means and throws it into a blender. What is humanity? Are you human because you have the physical attributes we commonly associate with being a homo sapien? Are you a human because of higher-level thoughts and consciousness? If you remove one piece out of the complex grab bag of what we see humanity as, are we still actually human?

SOMA presents these questions, and more, as you play through the roughly seven hour-long story. The game is classified as a survival horror game but I found it to be far more sci-fi than horror. It was, at least in my opinion, not quite as scary as Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Are there moments where it can be frightening? Absolutely. For me, however, the bulk of the horror came not from the diverse and chilling monsters or the deep-sea environment, but rather from how the...
