Amnesia: The Bunker Review (PC)
Frictional Games plays it safe. Perhaps a little too safe.
Frictional Games is known for crafting some of the most memorable horror game experiences over the past 15 years. They began with the Prenumbra series, a trio of titles that gave us our first taste of Frictional's penchant for blending survival horror with physics-based environmental puzzles. The studio then saw a spike in popularity with their next release, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Amnesia: The Dark Descent expanded upon the...

After Us Review (PS5)
After Us offers a glimpse of our future and a warning of things to come.
A gaming experience where you engage in thoughtful introspection, wordless encounters, and some platforming across Earth's many diverse locations to undo the devastation caused by global warming sounds like an intriguing idea on paper. Its execution in After Us, however, leaves quite a bit to be desired. Some awkward platforming, poor combat, and performance woes will ultimately leave you feeling a little less...

Redfall is Arkane's Worst Game Ever
It's also the worst "AAA" developed title in recent memory.
It was a struggle to finish Redfall. It was an absolute struggle thanks to performance issues, technical deficiencies, crashes, broken A.I., and uninspired quest design. It was the antithesis of fun and I pushed myself to complete the game out of pure spite.
Prior to playing Redfall, I saw Arkane as a studio that could do no wrong when it comes to their output. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006...

UK Blocks Microsoft Activision Merger
The CMA claims the deal would harm cloud gaming.
Cloud gaming. Cloud gaming is the reason why the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK voted to block the $69 billion deal that would see Microsoft taking over Activision Blizzard.
The decision didn't come down to concerns over Call of Duty exclusivity or anything that would make some measure of sense. No, it came down to the CMA being concerned that the deal would "undermine new and innovative" competition...

New Tendencies in PCs Which will be Seen in 2018
The world of the PCs, which has been living for quite a few years on earnings from its golden age of the past decade, is suffering a notable transformation in a very short period of time. When we talk about PCs, we are now not only talking about desktop computers, when all is said and done. Also included are laptop units, All in One units and desktop or gaming units.
The difference now between PCs and non PCs is the operating system which the unit uses, whether it is Windows,... -

Fortnite Hits 3.4 Million Concurrent User Peak
Last Sunday, Epic Games confirmed that Fortnite hit a new concurrent user peak of 3.4 million players. Of course, most of these were playing the free-to-play Fortnite Battle Royale, but that is still a very impressive number. However, as a result, the Fortnite servers started to buckle under the pressure. The team offered up a rather interesting and detailed postmortem of exactly what happens when 3.4 million people try to play a game at one time. A good deal of the postmortem is technica...

The Surge 2 Announced for 2019
At this year's Le What's Next de Focus, Focus Home Interactive and Deck13 announced The Surge 2. The first game, released back in May 2017, seemed to do quite well for itself. Well enough at least to warrant a sequel. The sequel looks to bring more action and limb dismemberment to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019. Yep, it's at least a year away from release right now.

Capcom Hit with Layoffs; Next Dead Rising Reduced in Scope
This week, Capcom confirmed that roughly 30% of their Vancouver studio were laid off due to a restructuring. This confirmation was provided to Kotaku after rumors started swirling that layoffs were happening. This restructuring seems to have impacted the company in a number of ways, most notably with the cancellation of an unannounced project and the reduction in scope for the next Dead Rising game.

Subnautica Dev Fired Over Racist and Transphobic Remarks on Twitter
Simon Chylinski is a former sound designer that worked with Unknown Worlds on the recently released Subnautica. Chylinski was fired this week after many people on social media discovered his rather vile statements and behavior on his Twitter account. Remarks that very clearly show Chylinski holds a variety of racist and transphobic tendencies.
I noticed these past few days a number of people voicing their disdain on Twitter for tweets offered up by Chylinski in the past. Some... -

Square Enix Acknowledges Issues with Final Fantasy XV PC Benchmark
The recent Final Fantasy XV benchmark for the PC seems to have had a few issues, as outlined by the team at Gamers Nexus. Among those issues were several LOD and culling issues that led to performance woes for a variety of hardware, especially if you were using anything but an Nvidia GPU.
Square Enix notes that they are aware of many of these issues and promise that they will be working on the performance for the final release of the game on March 6, 2018.

Monthly Poll

-
by Shawn ZipayIt's a fairly stacked month.
May and into June is usually when the mid-year lull begins for new game releases. Yet here we are in June 2023 and there are some big games either already out or coming out in the weeks ahead.
There are several games coming out this month, many of which you might call "bangers" that you might just happen to have your eye on. This month's poll is simple and probably a retread of a poll (or several) that have been done in the past....Street Fighter 60%0Amnesia: The Bunker0%0Diablo 450.00%1Aliens: Dark Descent0%0Final Fantasy 16100.00%2AEW Fight Forever0%0Crash Team Rumble0%0-
