After Us Review (PS5)
After Us offers a glimpse of our future and a warning of things to come.
A gaming experience where you engage in thoughtful introspection, wordless encounters, and some platforming across Earth's many diverse locations to undo the devastation caused by global warming sounds like an intriguing idea on paper. Its execution in After Us, however, leaves quite a bit to be desired. Some awkward platforming, poor combat, and performance woes will ultimately leave you feeling a little less...

Redfall is Arkane's Worst Game Ever
It's also the worst "AAA" developed title in recent memory.
It was a struggle to finish Redfall. It was an absolute struggle thanks to performance issues, technical deficiencies, crashes, broken A.I., and uninspired quest design. It was the antithesis of fun and I pushed myself to complete the game out of pure spite.
Prior to playing Redfall, I saw Arkane as a studio that could do no wrong when it comes to their output. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006...

Latest Steam Beta Makes Major Overhaul to the In-game Overlay
Watch YouTube, take notes, chat, and more.
Valve just released a new beta update for Steam that includes a wealth of new features, updated old features, and some under the hood changes. While we don't typically write about updates released for the Steam Client Beta, this particular update had enough cool new features that it was worth a mention.
Right now, you can opt into the new beta for the Steam client that makes some drastic changes to the In-Game Overlay. Now, you...

UK Blocks Microsoft Activision Merger
The CMA claims the deal would harm cloud gaming.
Cloud gaming. Cloud gaming is the reason why the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK voted to block the $69 billion deal that would see Microsoft taking over Activision Blizzard.
The decision didn't come down to concerns over Call of Duty exclusivity or anything that would make some measure of sense. No, it came down to the CMA being concerned that the deal would "undermine new and innovative" competition...

Report: E3 2023 is Canceled
This fate was inevitable.
According to a report by IGN, E3 2023 is canceled. This comes after weeks of publishers and gaming companies stating that they were not going to attend E3 this year, including Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Sega, Tencent, and more.
IGN's report from March 30 says that two separate sources confirmed with them that the Entertainment Software Association (ESA; the group behind E3) sent out emails to ESA members earlier today announcing the cancellation....

Subnautica Dev Fired Over Racist and Transphobic Remarks on Twitter
Simon Chylinski is a former sound designer that worked with Unknown Worlds on the recently released Subnautica. Chylinski was fired this week after many people on social media discovered his rather vile statements and behavior on his Twitter account. Remarks that very clearly show Chylinski holds a variety of racist and transphobic tendencies.
I noticed these past few days a number of people voicing their disdain on Twitter for tweets offered up by Chylinski in the past. Some... -

Square Enix Acknowledges Issues with Final Fantasy XV PC Benchmark
The recent Final Fantasy XV benchmark for the PC seems to have had a few issues, as outlined by the team at Gamers Nexus. Among those issues were several LOD and culling issues that led to performance woes for a variety of hardware, especially if you were using anything but an Nvidia GPU.
Square Enix notes that they are aware of many of these issues and promise that they will be working on the performance for the final release of the game on March 6, 2018.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Rumors Provide New Details on Single Player and Multiplayer Including Battle Royale Mode
A rumor that seemingly sprung up over night from a single outlet, perhaps sheds a few details on some of the gameplay features we can expect to see in Red Dead Redemption 2. Trusted Reviews published a rumor earlier today that suggests that Red Dead Redemption 2 will include the ability to play in first-person mode, the multiplayer will include a Battle Royale mode, and more. Trusted Reviews say that they first learned about a lot of these potential details back in August of 2017. It...

Yakuza 5, Yakuza 4, NBA 2K16, and More Arrive on PS Now
Sony announced that a bunch of new PlayStation titles were just released on PS Now this week. PS Now is Sony's streaming service that allows you to stream PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 games to your PlayStation 4 or PC. Of course, you can only do this if you pay a monthly fee (though there is a PS Now 7-day free trial).
Anyway, let's get on to the new games. That's why we're here, right?

Global Supersampling and Other New Features Coming in PlayStation 4 System Update 5.50
Sony revealed many of the new features coming in soon to be released 5.50 system software update for the PlayStation 4. The biggest addition for many people, at least those with a PlayStation 4 Pro, will be the global supersampling mode. This will allow for those people that use a Pro on a 1080p TV to experience enhanced visuals on many games that don't already provide an enhanced visual mode. Let's take a look at the full outline of changes that Sony wants you to know about for 5.50. A...

Underwater Horror Game Debris to Add Co-op on February 26
Though the single player component for the underwater horror adventure Debris came out in October 2017, the game still wasn't complete yet. That will all change when the team at Moonray Studios releases the game's new co-op mode on February 26.

Hands On Gameplay Preview of Past Cure
Back in January, I was offered the opportunity to try out an early build of the upcoming psychological thriller meets third-person action title, Past Cure. The build of the game I played was just two levels from the full game. At the time of the preview, the game was still very much in development at Phantom 8 Studio. Typically, when you play a game you notice that they tend to mesh all of their gameplay elements into a singular focus for the entirety of the experience. There usually isn...

Counter-Strike Co-Creator Deemed "A Risk to the Community" and Hit with $150K Bail
On Friday, Counter-Strike co-creator Jess Cliffe was hit with a $150,000 bail after being booked into King County jail on Thursday. The representative for the King County Prosecuting Attorney's office, Nyoka Maraire, requested that the bail be set for $250,000. This would be for both the "community's safety and the victim's safety." The $250,000 bail was requested after it was found that Cliffe had used an adult website to contact a minor and paid for sex multiple times. During one ...

Counter-Strike Co-Creator Jess Cliffe Arrested for Sexual Exploitation of a Child (Update: Valve Suspends Cliffe)
Jess Cliffe was arrested this morning (February 1, 2018) at 1:17AM (PT) for "sexual exploitation of a child." For those few of you who do not know, Jess Cliffe is a co-creator of Counter-Strike. He and Minh Le (Gooseman) created the wildly popular game back in 2000. It started as a modification for Half-Life and since became a number of very popular stand-alone products. While the police did not provide any additional details, we do know that Cliffe does not have a criminal history. He was book...

Red Dead Redemption 2 Release Date Set for October 26, 2018
Rockstar Games announced today that the release date for Red Dead Redemption 2 is now October 26, 2018. They also released some lovely looking new screenshots that I can only assume were taken on either the Xbox One X or a PC build of the game that "doesn't" exist. Let's just say that the image quality on display here is really damn good.

Sephiroth Added to Mobius Final Fantasy in Special Final Fantasy VII Event
Thanks to a special Final Fantasy VII collaboration event for Mobius Final Fantasy, players can now play as Sephiroth. Yep, the silver haired villain can be yours in a couple of different heroes.
The image above has Sephiroth doing his best "I can be your angle....or yuor devil" impersonation. In reality, or in fantasy, the left one is him as the "Ultimate Hero" and the right one is him as the "Hero of Despair."
Fans can also summon and transform into the newest Ultimate... -

Nintendo Switch Online Launching September 2018
Nintendo made the briefest of announcements this evening concerning their online plans for the Switch.
In a short Tweet, the company said that Nintendo Switch Online will launch in September 2018. That's it. There are absolutely no additional details provided. This would almost be non-news if it wasn't for the fact that Switch owners have been waiting for this for a while now.... -

GDC Revokes Pioneer Award from Nolan Bushnell Following Public Outcry
Every year, the Game Developers Choice Awards recognizes people that have had a significant influence in the industry for one reason or another. The recognition comes in the form of the Pioneer Award and is given to those that have "developed a breakthrough technology, game concept, or gameplay design at a crucial juncture in video game history." This year, the award was to be given to Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell. However, once this news broke, GDC was flooded with concerns and a fair bit of...
