The "superintendent" has made his return to the Bungie homepage to much fanfare and some confused looks.
Originally, the superintendent popped up around the time of E3, teasing at a big reveal announcement from Bungie. Unfortunately, the powers that be (Microsoft) nixed the idea of an E3 announcement, and postponed it until a later date. Perhaps that "later date" is coming sooner than we thought.
The log posted by the superintendent mentions the "UNSC", the military force found in the Halo universe. This is perhaps the first clear sign that the surprise announcement will actually reveal that Bungie will continue on as a developer of some Halo title.
