And those people will stop the sale of the game from people who believe the game to be a genuinely good purchase? Stop spreading FUD. You haven't played the game and cant comment, so don't. Whether or not this game will change your life by being added to an HTML page, I doubt it.

Marketing standpoint? Id imagine Valve is doing this relatively cheaply for Introversion, essentially a bedroom startup from a few years back with a breakthrough title Uplink, you may have heard of it? Itd be less expensive for them to use Steam than using retail chains, and after all, isn't that what its all about?

As for your comments on the steam interface, I half agree with you. That said i fail to see how 2 or 3 mouseclicks is going to make your life better.

I use the default view, not the mini-games view. I'm still annoyed with the new Steam layout. I liked the old one better. Mostly, I just play CS:S with friends on a LAN nowadays. I rarely play on internet servers by myself. So I would like Steam to start at the Servers window so I can jump onto an internet server with my buddies. I'm really pissed that servers started using that fade to black stuff. Ghosting used to be so much fun. :P

But about Darwinia... I think that it was kind of a risky move to use Steam as the delivery system for a game like that. From a marketing standpoint, the audience that Darwinia is more suited for is not really FPS players. Granted, with Steam they are able to get exposure to a large market, but a lot of that market is people like me and Dark Angel who might not be interested in a game like Darwinia. Or, who in fact might be hostile to such a game being released on their precious Steam.

What view do you use? I have mine set to start up with the mini-games list, and the only times I see advertisements are the occasional server banner when connecting to a game, or mainly just the Steam Update news once a week or so (which can easily be disabled in the options).

So, if you're seeing ads for things like RDKF every time you start up Steam... some easy and built-in options can fix that.

I do understand what you're saying about not liking to see other products on Steam that you're not interested in, but so long as they stay off of my games list and are only in purchase options, they don't bother me. I get easily annoyed by seeing stuff in the "coming soon" section at the top all the time. :)

Nighthawk... I agree with what you are saying.

I wasn't really surprised by any of the comments. CS-Nation never fails to amuse me. It's possible I am being unfair to Darwinia by dismissing it based upon a screenshot and a brief description. I won't deny that. But honestly, part of my bias against this game is the fact that it is being released on Steam. And again, maybe that's unfair to the developers also.

Maybe if this game was not being released on Steam I'd give it more of an objective look. But every time I open up Steam, I have "RAG DOLL KUNG FU only $14.95" staring me right in the face. And now I'm going to have another game that I don't want, staring me in the face every time I open up Steam... "DARWINIA only $19.95" It's really annoying.

But to be fair, Valve is also spamming me with ads to buy Half-Life 2, CS:CZ, and DoD:S, even though I already have all of this included in my Half Life 2: Silver package that I bought.

Valve should stick to the games/series that they have had success with: CS, DoD, Half-Life, etc... Or at the very least, give me an option to disable the ads for games I am not interested in, in addition to games I already own!

Sava, while you make a fair argument, you can't really blame people for being sensitive. You're talking to a group of people that often get criticized for liking what they like, typically by people who haven't experienced any of these things themselves.

How many kids out there had parents try to tell them that FPS games are going to twist them into the evil spawn of Satan? How often do we see the media quickly blame electronic violence for real-life violence? Video games are just one of many realms where people are often pre-judged by those who have no real basis to do so from, people who use mere outward apparence as their entire platform from which to launch attacks on the unknown.

By this point, the parallel should be pretty obvious. When you come out and harshly criticize something you clearly haven't experienced, it's going to instantly evoke not just an emotional response from your own words, but from every pent-up time that people have had to deal with the same attitude in their past.

So, whether your defense of your opinion is valid or not, when you stop and think about it... the response you're getting to it shouldn't come to you as a surprise.

That said, I did find Cmoney's "looks about as much fun as getting cancer" comment to be quite amusing, even if it's more or less a meaningless opinion. Honestly, though, people saying "looks like it'll be awesome!" are espousing opinions that are just as meaningless as those who say it looks retarded. Opinions of "ugly" or "pretty" however actually have a basis (screenshots) so that much of your opinion can come across as being somewhat based on reality.

for the record, I don't just like CS or FPS games...

Civ4 is currently one of my favorite games. I love the Civilization series as well as other strategy games. I'm also into RTS like Starcraft. I wasted countless hours on Battle.net building up my record zerg rushing with annoying Korean players ( ZERG RUSH KEKEKEKKEKE ).

So don't think just because I think this Darwinia game sucks, that I only play Counter-Strike.

And yes, I can judge a game by a screenshot. I don't have to play the demo or the actual game. I don't need to get hit in the nutz with a sledgehammer to know I wouldn't like that either.

If you disagree with my opinion. That's fine. But for the people that do disagree with me and Dark Angel. Why are you getting upset? Why do you feel threatened by our opinions? Why do you care what we think? Why does it matter to you that we think the game sucks?

If you guys like this game, isn't that all that matters?

I post on forums at fansites for the Civilization series, and many people there do not like FPS's and Counter-Strike. But I don't care what they think. I like CS. I like other FPS's as well.

So if you like Darwinia, by all means, buy it. But don't rip on people for having an opinion.

Perhaps so, but the authors pulled it from their site per VALVe's request. Apparently they're going to make a demo available via Steam at some point in the future. In the meantime, you'll either have to search various sites on the net to find a current install, or maybe an old demo install, or find some other listing of Darwinia demos to download from.

Of couse, that would take more effort than just checking Darwinia's site or waiting for it to be released on Steam, so pick your poison.

Yep it happens... Its what we all though steam would turn into I guess a dumping ground for games. But try the demo before you bash it ^^. I'm not going to say whether its bad or good because I havn't tried a demo of it, but sounds interesting.
Steam was designed by Valve as a means of circumventing traditional marketing methods for any and all interested developers. It gets their name out without all the corporate bullshit. Think of it as an indie label but for video games. All these other games being released on Steam just mean Vavle's dreams are coming to fruition.

THE FULL GAME IS ALREADY OUT.

And don't say this game sucks if you haven't even played it.

I have played it and it's a VERY good game.

Though this game has nothing to do with CS, it DOESN'T mean anything negative either. Why are there then comments about ignoring CS? This game has a completely different development team and the only VALVe cycles spent on it will be in product marketing.
