  • Article: Microsoft Bans Xbox One Owners That Received Their Consoles Early from Target (Update)

Update: It seems as though Microsoft realized the error of their ways and are trying to make amends. They said they will remove the ban, remove the strike, and they have invited the user out to the Xbox One launch event!

It's nice to see such a happy resolution to something that was absolutely bonkers to begin with. Huge props to Microsoft and Major Nelson for doing the right thing.

Original: Target accidentally started to ship out pre-order units of the Xbox One to the tune of about 150 out of their total number of pre-orders. One user immediately put his console up on eBay where it hit around $10,000 before the seller pulled it for reasons unknown. Another user downloaded the day one update (roughly 500MB) that would actually allow them to play games (without it, you cannot play retail games or do much of anything), and started posting about their experiences on social media.

The person, that goes by the online handle of Moonlightswami, who decided to actually play the console he bought was quite vocal about his experience. There really wasn't anything he didn't shy away from talking about but most everything he said about it was was quite positive. He posted impressions of the dashboard and offered up many quick screen grabs from the console. He talked about how much HDD space some games took up. The games he tried took up between 43GB and 31GB of space each, which is fairly significant given that the system ships with a 500GB HDD.

Just to reiterate here. This person legally purchased his console and it just happened to be shipped to him early (not his fault). He posted largely positive remarks about his experience on social media outlets. He provided a wealth of information to a public that has largely been kept in the dark about some of the finer details of the Xbox One.

And then Microsoft banned his account. They also issued a copyright violation takedown on YouTube of his unboxing video of his system. To put it bluntly: Microsoft are being complete dicks for no reason.

The only bright side to this is that Xbox Live's Major Nelson tweeted that the ban would not be permanent. There shouldn't even be a ban in the first place, but that's besides the point.

Meanwhile, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that if any PS4 gets into the hands of gamers early, they will not be banned.
