I realise that I am very slow on the uptake with this but I have discovered 'Forgotten Hope 2', which is the most goddamn fantastic BF2 mod that I ever played.
In a complete departure from the typical run around @ 100mph whilsdt spamming grenades and fragging left right and centre FPS, this mod aims for a more realistic approach whilst still maintaining aracade elements. The result is a game that demands a much more patient and strategic approach, where teamplay is utterly essential. Whilst this may not sound like fun to many of the instant thrillseekers out there, I personally find that when the action comes, the experience is a whole lot more rewarding than in any other shooter out there at the moment.
The models of the soldiers, land vehicles, and especially the aircraft are true works of art and some of the levels in the game, play out like the WW2 action thriller from your childhood dreams. As an outstanding example, one of the levels involves a German advance on a coastal desert town area, and kicks of with 4 or 5 Stuka's diving (wailing engine sounds n all) down on the British bases and wreacking havoc, whilst mounted machine guns on the back of troop transportation trucks try to spray the planes with hot lead (remember, this is not a CoD style 'set scene', this is real individual gamers intuitively re-enacting such a cinematic scene for themselves).
Discovering this game/mod has totally reignited my interest in gaming which kind of proves my theory that the general wane in interest in gaming amongst many enthuisast gamers perhaps has more to do with modern games all being dumbed down, high special effect clones of each other, than that us PC gamers are 'just getting old'. Being a mod based on a by now very old game (BF2), this means that there is not a huge community. However, in Europe thier are 5-7 servers (generally based in Germany) which are adequately populated throughout the day, 4 of which are pretty much full to 64 capacity during peak gaming times. There are also a handful of other popular servers which I dont play on due to getting a crappy ping.
A word of warning to anyone who is thinking of giving the mod a try. You will find it very frustrating at first due to automatically deploying the kind of FPS skills which have served you well in CoD, or even BFBC2. FH2 is not a game for any of the Leeroy Jenkins' out there and any attempts at heroic mad rush or rambo tactics will always be punished. Unless you are flying, Lone-Wolfing also ends in nothing but frustration and a brutally low K/D Ratio.
