Warner Brothers Purchase of Midway Complete - Problems Arise
Publisher Warner Brothers have completed there purchase of Midway Games yesterday as confirmed by several Midway employees. Check it out:
After the purchase was completed yesterday rumors arose that the Midway Games and logo would be phased out for the Warner Brothers Interactive branding. In an interview with gaming blog Joystiq, Midway's Geoff Mogilner said that the matter was far from clear-cut. "The name and the mark are owned by Warner Bros. and it is up to them to figure out the branding strategy," he said. "[WB] bought the assets and the trademark and all the copyrights and the logo and all that ... to say the name is dead, it's silly but, ya know, it's premature -- the company Midway Games, Inc. still exists."
Development on the next Mortal Kombat game is still said to be in development with no interruptions by the Chicago studio.
GamePolitics reports that Midway's Newcastle studio in the U.K. has been shut down this morning following a surprise visit by CEO Matt Booty. Workers have been let go without pay and some are reportedly posting about it on Facebook. Warner Brothers previously said that the Newcastle and San Diego studio were not included in the Midway Games purchase.
Neither Midway or Warner Brothers have confirmed the actual closing of the studio or the fate of the Midway Games name, expect a press release from the company sometime soon hopefully clearing up the misinformation.
