The new Wii-exclusive squadmate mode was affectionately referred to as the "girlfriend" mode during our demonstration. The way it works is one player plays through the game normally, but at any time, a second Wii Remote can be picked up so a friend can jump in on the fun. The second player essentially takes part in an on-rails shooter, except in this case you can punch the rails in the arm when they go the wrong way. We were reminded of the Namco arcade driving shooter, Lucky & Wild, where one player drives and shoots and player two just shoots (and elbows player one when they mess up).
In this mode the second player shoots using their own crosshair on-screen, and can pick up weapons as they are come across over the course of gameplay. This mode seems perfect for the type of player that wants to shoot stuff without having to bother with learning movement controls or interacting with setpieces. They still have to reload, but that's as simple as shaking the Remote. It's just point-and-blast gameplay, and if it wasn't for the mature content, would be perfect for kids.
