  • Gamers Angry at "Spornography" Censorship

CNN has reported on the potentially massive issue of "Spornography". It came about when users began to create vulgar characters in the Spore Creature Creator released on Steam a few weeks ago.

Fans are outraged that characters such as the "two-legged dancing testicles", "giant breast monster" and the "four-legged phallic fornication machine" are being censored by EA games and Youtube. One anonymous TGN member had this to say:

"It is outrageous how they censor what I believe is an art form. They released tools which enable me to create such creatures and therefore i should be able to show them off how i want."

It will be interesting to see whether design is limited in a patch or when the full game is released. Here is what CNN had to say:

We should have seen something like this coming...

Hopefully there will be a way to "ban" creatures that happen to be a tad too explicit. I don't mind walking penises and stuff but there are much worse things you can do

But if we're really lucky all the asshats will go and play spore so we don't have to see them in other games.

I also don't really care. Censorship is just lame, but some things aren't appropriate for the very young.

Is it ever possible to give a game an 18 rating because of what you can create using the tools inside?

Re: Gamers angry at "spornography" censorship

Every game says that "online interactions are not rated by the ESRB" so why is EA trying to police people and censor them? Sure it's immature if that's all people make, but where is the line drawn on what is acceptable and what isn't.

                I love the "art form"

PORN IS ART, DAMNIT. Along with drug use, cussing, alcohol, peeing in the snow, and graffiti.

However, I dont believe in the censorship. When you give people this much creativity, they do stuff like this. I remember playing SOF2 and this one servers skins were guys in their skins. CS:S has its sprays.

I knew something like this would be possible, so Ive chosen to stay clear of the game. If others want penis creatures, thats up to them.

Re: Gamers angry at "spornography" censorship

EA will try to censor it because like the sims they are trying to make this a very mainstream game and market it to a wide demographic

they don't want parents coming home to find their kid looking at Sporn on their ****ty dell pcs

Maybe they should make a spornography filter similar to the one Google uses to filter its pages. *snigger*

                      Too...****ing...funny.:awes

On a serious notes, its comical that EA can't see that video games are the exact sort of entertainment medium thats suppose to push the boundaries. The very purpose of video games is to be uncensored. This is just a couple of people uncomfortable with human body parts suffering from paranoia over a non-issue.

Most kids know very well where to find porn on the internet... This isn't much worse.

And this isn't even porn, it's 3D pictures of body parts they'll see sooner or later anyway :awes

Says who? You might as well say "The very purpose of Internet forums is to be uncensored" and see how far that gets you here
