Dawn Of War II Unit Customization Preview

IGN brought out a new preview about Dawn of War II centering around squads, their abilities, the customization of their equipment and how you'll be able to blow up your opponent's cover. Check it out:
The identification process begins with the reduced number of units under a player's control. Players now get individual sergeants (that each come with two subordinates) that come complete with names and specializations. Cyrus, for example, is a Scout Marine who wears lighter armor and can move faster than the others. Thaddeus, on the other hand, is an assault marine, one of those quiet fellows in the back whose job it is to make things die. Each of them comes complete with a series of outfitting slots that players can use to swap bits of gear in and out to specially customize them for particular missions. In this demo, we saw the Relic demonstrator consider a heavy minigun-style weapon for Thaddeus before deciding to leave him with his standard bolter. Apparently the quick-firing bolter is the best choice for missions involving orks as their sheer numbers and relative fragility seem to dictate that more bullets would be more effective than higher-damage but slower-firing shotguns.

Another factor in player strategy will be the quality of the Marine's equipment. In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the human Imperium is at a technological standstill. It seems that being in religious thrall to a half-dead God-Emperor who discourages independent thought isn't exactly the best atmosphere for basic research. As a result, the Empire doesn't really understand how its own technology works, so new items and weapons are almost always inferior to older stuff. This is reflected in the game's MMO-style loot system. During battle, enemies will often drop pieces of equipment such as weapons and armor that will be classified according to a World of Warcraft-style yellow/green/blue classification system. In the mission we watched, one of the potential rewards for defeating the Ork Warboss was the "Sword of Purity," a Space Marine-style chainsaw sword that could be slotted on a Space Marine Force Commander.

Be sure to check out the whole preview.
