    Re: BF2 for mac?

Macs are twice as powerful as most computers...

    Power Mac G5:
    Two dual-core 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 processors
    1.25GHz frontside bus per processor
    1MB L2 cache per core
    4GB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (8X512)
    250GB Serial ATA hard drive
    16x SuperDrive (double-layer)
    Three open PCI-Express expansion slots
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB GDDR SDRAM
That would be my dream machine and that is nowhere near as highly spec'd as a fully loaded apple G5.

      Re: BF2 for mac?

Only thing I need to know about Macs, my dad got a brand new iMac and I checked the specs, it had slightly-lower specs than the pre-assembled Windows box I got 4 years before it (including the PC133 memory, at a time most stuff was PC2700) and cost slightly more.

But BF2 for Mac? Possible, I suppose, but BF2 uses a lot of DX9 shaders which can NOT be ported without simply remaking them. Would be even more chaotic as the PC/Mac ports of Halo.

          Re: BF2 for mac?

Everyone knows the only game worth playing on a mac is photoshop.

PS: None of the versions of unreal tournament to date are 'hungry' at all. And if your talking the original UT (now 7 years old) than there is something wrong with your mac. :)

as Soccerplaya07 says above "maybe back in the day..." or maybe it's just 'hungry' on a mac.

            Re: BF2 for mac?

It's a PC game, when theres enough of a market for gamers with Macs it might be ported, until then it makes no financial sense.

macs never have and never will be gaming machines, the nature of the system, hows its marketed, how its sold, its price, its target audience etc, it all works agsint it.

If you want to play games, get a PC, or do one better and build your own PC.

                Re: BF2 for mac?

You can barely upgrade MACs, getting hold of parts is hard and expensive when you can, they're PC's for n00bs plain and simple. They want everything plug and play and basicalyl failsafe.

Gaming is a pastime that requires upgrades every few years to stay up to date with the new games, this simply isnt practical for MACs.

TOTALY FORGET GAMING ON A MAC, FULL STOP

It's a niche market at best, not worth anyones time or money.

                  Re: BF2 for mac?

Macs are not nearly as powerful as PC's when it comes to gaming. AMD blows away PPC's anyday. Even the new intel macs won't stand a chance against an Athlon 64.
Took the words outta my mouth.

PCs have way more power than macs in gaming...

                    hola.. ...

                    Have not heard anything.
Know your feeling. Was fiending for while m'self.

Played quite bit of B 1942, Secret Weapons on dual processor G5 [mac].
Tell you that had some seriously great Desert Combat matches.
                    Sigh.. ....
Wish they would adapt some of those maps for BF2.

Got hook up on PC exclusively for gaming.
Have had to shell out cash for videocard.. .... just purchased new motherboard + 2 gig of RAM.

                    * Whatever on PC versus Mac argument. Who cares if you can do what you want to ? Video editing, audio sequencing, blah blah blah.
Since PC + Mac are getting in bed together - pointless debate.

This kinda sums it up for the whole pc vs mac thing .

If you want to game .. choose a PC
If youve got a Job to do .., choose Mac

I asked both EA and DICE back in November if they were planning on developing BF2 for mac, and EA just said, "that's DICE's job" and DICE just said they can't say anything. So I wouldn't hold my breath.

There's a number of reasons for this that have little to do with the speed of Apple's hardware. With few exceptions, games are built for the PC first and then only later ported to Mac. This means that they generally aren't optimized for Mac specific things like multi-processing or OpenGL. There are also speed hits that occur from memory management issues as well as converting a game from DX to OpenGL.

You can barely upgrade MACs, getting hold of parts is hard and expensive when you can, they're PC's for n00bs plain and simple. They want everything plug and play and basicalyl failsafe.
Shouldn't plug and play be just that? I like something to work when I plug it in, I shouldn't to have to **** around with it. M$ invented the bloody term anyway.

Consumer level Macs generally aren't very upgradeable (aside from memory). Higher end hardware is a very different story, I upgraded my rig (DP 2Ghz G5, Radeon X800, 4GBs RAM) with a standard SATA hard drive and PC3200 memory from the same story that I bought the components to put together my PC.

The problem is Apple's consumer level hardware doesn't have the saming gaming punch as a computer you built yourself. Gamer's generally optimize their rigs for gaming as much as possible, getting the most performance for the least amount of money. A high end mac generally is pretty comparable to a high end gaming rig, the price difference is because the Mac is designed to do a whole lot more than play games and download pr0n.

I believe BF2 uses the Havok physics engine, and that will stop a Macintosh port dead in it's tracks. Those morons at Havok want so much money for their precious code, that no company that ports PC games to the mac can afford their licensing fees. The code is already written, it's just sitting around on a server somewhere. GameSpy has also increased the licensing fees for the Macintosh version of their SDK to a similarly unmarketable price. I don't get it. Why charge $20 to feed 5 dogs, when you just charged $5 to feed 100?

Battlefield 2 will never come to the Mac. At least not PPC Macs. You can bet that if BF2 ever did come to the Mac, it would be long after the next BF game is released. That's what happened with BF1942. It got released two years after the PC and they only got DC_Final to work properly in December of last year.

Kinda sucks, but that's the way it is. There are plenty of other games to play, CoD2 and Quake IV are coming out for Mac in a month or two anyway.
