Ok guys. I should have checked this out first, but I bought an x800 VE without knowing that it only has 4 pipes. (Im a dad and a sucked for a bargain)
Is it really that bad? I have an ati 9800 128mb at the moment. Surely the x800 VE will look a lot better for bf2?
Because the lesser number of pipelines on the VE is offset by the raw speed increase it has over the 9800, it is basically a lateral move performance wise. The addition of the extra 128MB of VRAM will depend upon the game. BF2 will use 256MB of video buffer so it should help some - but the specifications don't really qualify it as an upgrade since it doesn't come close to doubling the performance as an upgrade should at any given price point.

Pointless upgrade. One video card will look the same as any other of that brand if they support the same features. The only difference will be the FPS.
Aw man, Im going to be put through hassle getting this card replaced.
Anyone have any good things to say about the x800 VE from experience?

ATi can get pretty weird when it comes to new card upgrades.
Don't buy the X1600 or the X1300. Sure, they're bigger numbers, but they have lower number of pipes etc. They're no good.
If you can, go for the X800 or the X850 series (Not the VE, XL or any of that stuff. Try to get the XT versions, or the XT PE) XT just means Extreme. Depending on your budget of course.
But those are the cards to go for.
If you have LOTS OF MONEY, then you should be looking at the X1800 - X1900.
If you have LOTS OF MONEY, then you should be looking at the X1800 - X1900.
A single non-crossfire edition x1900xt will do you good. It's currently in a tied position for "Fastest" GPU on the PC market.
It competes directly with the 7800GTX 512mb, but for a bit less cash.
If you don't have that type of money. Then a simple "Asus" X800xt 256mb, or a "Sapphire" X800 512mb will do you good for what could be considered to be the standard resolutions for most (1024x768).
I truely suggest the X1900xt. Although expensive in a sense, it's a great value considering your getting a 7800gtx 512mb, for about 450-550. 200$ savings.
Heres a tip for running it on high. I figured this out.. Go into your movies and delete your movies about 200MB's of RAM is used just from the back ground movies and is never released when the game starts up. It will fix your choppyness if you had any as far as running it on high. It probally won't look better, unless you were already running on medium and can increase it to high.

I'd prefer to run the game on 1280x1024 with no AA. AA isn't needed when you're on high res.
From what i've noticed, higher resolutions take less processing power than having AA turned on.
Thanks for the advice guys. Im either going to pick up a 6800 gs 256mb agp or a 7800 gs 256mb agp.
I dont want to spend any more money on this pc as I will be buying anew this year for pci.
These are either going to cost me 320 euros for the 7800 or 275 euros for the 6800.

works/looks GREAT
can now be bought for less than $200USD
I got and x1800xl all in wonder ($380)
just a tad better
we both run all settings on high, but
shadows off
dynamic lights off
AA x2
I run 1600 x 1200 (to match LCD)
he runs 1280 x 1024
both get 70-99 fps even in high load times
(effects overloads)
if we put on shadows etc
still get over 50fps
which is perfect on the ground
but we do lots of flying and more fps makes big diffference
I have no experince with Nvidia cards
but am more than pleased with ATI for 10 years now
so for $200 you get great graphics
