best fps would actually be a) constant and b) at same rate (or a multiplier/divider) of packet send/receive rate.

    what i mean :

if you send/receive 80 packets/sec. (data packets from server) then best would be to have 80 fps (or 40 fps but that may be too low)

i dont know at what rate bf2 send/received packets (and im too lazy to check that , but i sure will lol) but it may worth to check it out , and set the fps accordingly.

Re: Does a better Graphics Card give you and advantage?

Well this thread has gone on and on, but when I first posted on this thread I had a naff OLD PC Global score 30000.

Average score per round was 30-40, all settings LOW, in close up firefights like karkand I even had to set my VIS to 60% or I got LAG/Stutter etc. And still in many up close firefights I got owned.

I then got a zboard. My score per min, win ratio etc started to go up quite a bit. Then I got the new machine. Score went verticle, Global score now 3 weeks later 50000. I now score 60-100+ per round. I own 95% of firefights 1 on 1 or up close.

Is it the big screen, well no I got that before my machine, and my score did get much better when I moved from a 17" to a 32". But when I got a decent CPU and GPU. My score just went threw the roof.

      REASON?

2 GIG + CPU mean I am often first in on a server and can nab tank/chopper or good position and own for a time.

CPU=GPU gives 99 FPS, almost no slow down ever and with G36E I can hit short or long range and butcher people. It's hard to describe but im 1000x better than I was with the old PC.

Better eye candy DOES give a huge tatical advantage, first a great PC runs 100% vis range and no issues or slowdown. Dynamic lights and shadows mixed with high lighting means people sitting and hiding STAND OUT LIKE YOU'D NEVER BELIEVE. High Effects means you see vapour trails properly and NOOB tube trails. Even where your bullets are landing.

One big thing I have noticed with high FPS, well yes it is SMOOTH. But you can also see where your bullets hit properly. Like the movie at the start. Sounds ODD but if you play on a dcent PC you will know what I mean, especially hitting people running from left to right or right to left in front of you, even at range.

The biggest tatical advantage especially on karkand is with Dynamic Lighting on high you can see things that shoot further than 100 percent vis range I reckon another 20 or 30 percent distance. Especially Armour APC and MG's, the dynamic light system is NOT cut off at 100 percent range. Ever wondered how you got owned and you got not even SEE the TANK? Thats why {and some people have a fog cheat i think}.

Final proof is tonight on CC Karkand the number 1 ranked Karkand 24/7 sever with the help of a extremelly GREAT engineer I got a Kill streak of 48 while playing about another 5 Sergeant Majors, no noob server. My engineer buddy keep healing me and although we had to run off and find ammo twice as our commander seemed not to care for us getting amoo, we own the hotel and next spawn point, kinda sat beween the two and killed everything including the enemy tank 3 times. I have never ever owned like that before and wont for some time but thats to the 7800 GTX I could see where anti tank was hiding and see by there shadows if they were coming out to shoot me and well 48 on Karkand against good players is something I amazed I got away with. And they were all playing AT by the end trying to nail me...

yes, less graphic lag, with my 5500 i wasnt able to fly helis or jets, or the shell shock would last 3 times longer

one thing i noticed, when playing CS:Source, you can spot people hiding around corners due to the shadows that you cant have with a low end card.....so i guess give an advantage.

Re: Does a better Graphics Card give you and advantage?

Ugh..I hate these message boards, they are so unforgiving. If you are trying to type a long message and then post it you'll get booted and loose what you wrote because the system thinks you are idle.

Anyway...I had this huge write up I was going to post to explain the difference between LCD and CRT monitors - one that went into great technical detail. However, as mentioned, when I went to post it the mesage board kicked me and I lost what I had written.

So I'm going to leave out all the technical mobo-jumbo and get right to the point.

Refresh rate for LCD montiors means nothing, zilch, nada since the tech behind an LCD is totally different than a CRT monitor and that is why LCD monitors are easier on your eyes than CRT's - LCD's do not flicker. Reponse time is what is important if you are looking for an LCD monitor to game with. Anything slower than 16ms and you're probably going to see ghosting. Todays LCD's are very much improved and many have response times faster than 12ms.

Tearing and stuttering is not caused by your CRT or LCD monitor - at all. Tearing and stuttering is caused when your computer is not able to update the graphical data fast enough. This can be due to your gpu on your graphics card or a combination of your CPU and GPU not being able to stay up with all the information that needs to be drawn. There is numerous "bottlenecks" that can occur in gaming rigs and that is why most FPS gamers will turn down the graphics to get the highest frames rates possible - all the time.

Now if you want me to post all the technical info on the difference between CRT's and LCD's I'll rewrite my post from memory, again, and post it. It will be long and some things some of you might not understand, but I will try my best to write it in terms that anyone will understand. So to reiterate...refresh rates on LCD's means absolutely nothing when it comes to gaming - it is response time that matters - the faster the response time, and higher native resolution, however, means everything. CRT's use refresh rate because of the tech behind them. LCD's and CRT's are two totally different tech's and the only thing they have in common is that they are both capable of giving the illusion of motion on your viewing screen by constantly updating, sequentially, frames of data - one frame at a time. It is how they produce those frames(images) that is the big difference.

As for the orignal OP's question. Without a doubt the faster your computer can draw the data it requires to update the next frame - the more advantage you'll have over someone whose system is bogging down because it cannot.

IS it just me, but when I watched the beloved Canadian show Popular Mechanics for Kids, it said the human eye can only see 45 FPS or something, so isn't anything over that overkill?

have u ever tried to kill someone at 15 fps...its like impossible to aim..u move ur mouse slightly left...and it stutters and u move it some more and it goes too far..so i would buy a new videocard
                      This is simply wrong.

You can have a bad comp and turn your graphics up and have worse FPS.

And even with a good comp, turning your graphics down will give you better graphics because it's not trying to push out so much.

You sure they didnt say "Frequency"?

Because I can tell teh difference between 80 FPS and 45 for sure.

Not really sure, it was years and years ago, but your probably right, because on my current pice of rubbish,1.8ghz 768RaM Intelextreme graphics, I cant even run BF1942 on anyhting but all low to get 25 FPS.

Actually that doesn't really have to do with anything.

you gives a **** about being the best and changing your graphics and everything. keep the settings where your computer can run them and give u great fps. That way you truly enjoy the game, its about having fun and not owning all the noobs for me, and I like the game to look good

The size changes in objects and ppl in game are small but the thing I saw about my new rig compared to running low settings on my old one was amazing. You can see light glisten off helmets and ppl stand out alot more no matter the camo colors. You also get the advantage of detailed shadows moving around giving away the sniper above. If you are a pilot the differences are even more dramatic as you can line up them bomb runs a mile away.

Of course it will! I had the same problem, getting owned and not knowing it... then my 6800gt wiped all that away. Still it happens though... but that's because of me being unprepared or reloading.
I have to agree with super here. My experience is going from a gforce 5500 to 6800gt. I have to say that it does help. I use to get 30-40 points per game. the first time I played with my new stuff I got high 80's. I now average that most games. I am no computer expert but higher Frame rate has to help.
