Glasseye, I'm not quite sure what you mean; the tactics are more complex in this iteration of AoE than the past two. How long have you actually played the demo? I've got about 5-7 hours under my belt right now.

no, you got me. im critisizing a game i havent even played.

the 'tactics' are the same level as warcraft 3. if that. mass grenadiers and your done.

GS: Tell us about the tech that's being used for the game's artificial intelligence in battle. Is the plan to realistically model the marching formations and tactics of soldiers of the day? Or morale in battle? Will soldiers be predisposed to act as they did in specific historical battles? How in-depth will the AI get?

DP: That's an interesting question. It's unlikely we'll get down to modeling morale; we like units that do what we tell them to do too much for that. But, we have spent a great deal of time on research and development for some very cool combat innovations. The combat system in Age III is all new. One of the big changes is that it's very group-based. People expect this time period to deliver musketeers standing in volley formation, cavalry charging into combat as a big group, and infantry forming their collective lines to defend the precious cannons as they shell the unlucky enemies. We set out to build a group combat system that gives players more-interesting tactical control than previous real-time strategy games. We wanted to fix the, "Hey, I'll screw up pathing by just micromanaging my units all around the combat"-type of thing. We did that pretty quickly, actually. The hard part has been taking that and making it feel like an Age game in terms of user control and flexibility. I think we've finally rounded that corner just recently. It's very, very cool to play right now.

I gave up after about 30 minutes when the enemy came with about eight thousand pikemen and ripped apart my main town. All my settlers were dead, all my soldiers, Major cooper. The only one left alive was amelia whom I had ran down to the bottom of the map to build trading posts.

I never finish because I end up trying to take over the whole map with buildings and no army and that makes the guy with the army mad so he smokes me out

lol << aviation i used to do that, but now when i begin game i just order up some 8 muskateers from city for a lil backup in the begining then i get an army soon..

Question is there a limit to the population or can you just create houses upon houses and army upon army?

i love aoe, i beat expert british and spanish on both maps, texas is a little harder. usually for new england i just hurry up and move all my people to the island on the right thats always there, pick up the massive treasures there, start a town and attack with about 150 imperial redcoats, old skool :p

I just about exploded when I heard about this. AOE II was the game that got me hooked on gaming. I always looked at AOE III as sort of a legend that would never happen...:cry:

The demo looks really nice but has a few bugs here and there in it, which ES have said have already been corrected with the final version due for retail release. The demo looks to be from an early build and yet is graphically stunning, with real water reflections, shadows casting as they should based on sun position, particle effects are awesome. The really nice touches are the various wildlife around which all adds to the ambience.

This looks to be one hell of a game when it's released...can't wait for the full version.

The demo has taken me away from BF2, I'm really enjoying it that much as a change of pace.
