Really depends on the map. More open, long-range maps I tend to prefer the AK. For close combat I tend to appreciate the lower recoil of the M4 in full-auto fire.

In general I'm a big fan of picking up whichever my team can't buy, however, because it seems that a lot of terrorists ignore the sound of AK fire (and CTs to M4 fire) near them, making it easier to take out a group of a couple enemies from behind without them all returning fire almost immediately.

AK is the only assault rifle to one hit kill headshots even with helmet, and the M4 takes two. I prefer the AK if I can get my hands on it.
