I was just thinking, since I am kinda new to CoD4, although I am at level 36 I think, so I'm not a complete noob, but what are the differences between the sniper rifles? Say, the Barrett and the R700? Does the .50 always inflict 100% damage? Thanks in advance.
What's the difference?

And Sike was talking about HardCore.. So that kinda falls to the multiplayer section..
If you are talking about "normal" softcore MP, then i would say there isn't much of an difference, M40/R700/.50 cal shoot to torso with Stopping power equipped, it's one shot one kill to everything except guys with Juggernaunt..Comment

Softcore - Minimap, bullet count, frag counts, 100% health, crosshairs
HardCore - No minimap, bullet count, frag counts, crosshairs, and 30%health
R700 is suppose to be more powerful and accurate, so it has one less bullet (and longer reload time?) than the M40 for balance. Its also bolt action.

R700 is bolt action and has quite a bit more recoil in comparison to other rifles.
Personally, I hate both the rifles. Many use the Barrett because they THINK it does more damage, when in actuality it does just as much as the R700, and in hardcore any minor differences are ruled out.
The Barrett almost seems like a beefed up version of the dragunov in gameplay terms - it's louder and makes you feel like you're delivering a bigger punch. R700 - hmm, not sure why people use it... it seems to have more hitbox issues than the other rifles.
To answer the bullet question, I'm pretty certain that the reasoning behind the R700 having fewer bullets is due to the fact that the ingame statistics state it does more damage than the M40 - making it more balanced.
Not to bring personal opinions into this, but I highly recommend trying out the M40. It's more accurate, carries more rounds, and absolutely devastates in hardcore. For softcore, use Stopping Power in Perk 2 to compensate for the reduced damage, and in hardcore I recommend UAV Jammer or Sleight of Hand (based on your play style).Comment

Thanks for the help Aerialz, greatly appreciated. I did use the M40, and I unlocked the ACOG scope. That thing sucks. Anyway, when I unlock the Dead Silence, does it COMPLETELY reduce my noise i make from moving? also, im guessing that it does not take away any noise from the gun itself...?Comment

Dead silence takes ALL sound away from footsteps - the only exceptions are when you fall/jump/etc.
*It does not affect weapons at all.
It's a great perk to have when you are trying to be stealthy, but Deep Impact also comes in very handy in certain situations.Comment

Dead Silence does not eliminate all walking sounds. There still is a slight sound which can be heard by people like myself with good headphones. Don't believe the lie! I can hear you... heheheComment

Not for long with your sound turned up so loud, lol.
In HC the only thing that matters is accuracy and recoil so for me its more along the line of the M21, low recoil yet still accurate enough to hit someone consistently. Semi auto and a bigger clip are also nice perks. For Standard I like the M40 with Stopping Power and Deep Impact or just the .50 cal with Deep Impact, then again I really don't like Standard and play HC most of the time.
I went 15-0-0 in a HC Bloc server once with the Deagle once. That thing is accurate, screw sniper rifles! Mind you that was not a normal round for me, it looks normally more like 7-1-19 or 12-1-13!Comment
