Cannot connect to socket

I bought the Battlefield 2 Deluxe Edition a while ago and decided to play single player for awile, untill I got used to the controls. Finally I decided to get on-line and play there. I went through the regerstration process and clicked submit. A message came up after awhile saying something along the lines of not being able to connect to a socket. Because the propbem sounded external, like a router not plugged in, I checked my connection and it was on and working properly. I also tried updating several times, but it always stays v1.1 no matter what i do. I asked around on the GameFAQs boards but never received and answer. Anybody have possible solutions?
