This has been pasted from the ea forums just to try and maximise the help received :)
Symptoms:
- CTD with no errors after 5 minutes actual playing time (or there abouts, never any longer). This only occurred after 1.2 patch and no new patches have fixed it.
Possibly related:
- Game freezes then speaksrs "pop" for a moment just after I'm loaded into the server. (Found to be related to using either EAX or Hardware sound)
- Cobra/Hind TV-Guided missiles view causes instant errorless CTD as well. No idea if they are related. (Help about this is appreciated)
Tried:
- Installing Service Pack 2
- Reinstalling with squential patches
- Reinstalling with whole patches
- Reinstalling without SF
- Virus scan
- Spyware scan
- Updated Punkbuster
- Used old and new GFX drivers (all recommended ones + more)
- Using lower graphical settings
- Using higher graphical settings
- Using custom graphical settings
- Disabling 3d Sounds etc
- Updating soundcard driver
- Replacing some sound DLL to make Audigy work better*
- Removing GFX softmod
- Overclocking GFX
- Underclocking GFX
- Using house fan to cool innards (CPU 30C, GPU 60C in-game)
- Removed StarForce with removal tool
- Used fixed Pagefile
- Used system managed Pagefile
* http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3256 trying this again to see if patch overwrote it
Edit: Apparently not.. still broken.
I think that's everything..
Specs:
- ALthon XP 2700+
- 1Gb RAM (2x512) 2.5 CAS (Micron Tech PC2700)
- ATi X800 VIVO softmodded to have 16 pipelines
- MSI-6590 KT400
- Creative Audigy 2
- Sharp LL
Software:
- Windows XP Pro SP1 and now SP2
- ATItool (temp monitoring)
- ATI management thing
- TrendMicro Internet Security 8/PC-Cillin
Notes:
- Plays TES IV: Oblivion just fine, same for CS:S and a whole host of other games. This problem only started to happen after the 1.2 patch, never crashed before that.
- Get FPS of around 25 with current settings (Custom, 1034x768x60) no graphical artefacts afaik.
- Nothing in event log etc other than strange punkbuster service starting("d4k7b3a4" - Google references were slim and useless).
If anyone else recognises these symtoms or something similar then please help me fix it.. please..
Edit:
I'll see if my offline game lasts longer than 5 minutes, see if it's something to do with a) network card or b) something in the game I can't help.

Happens in singleplayer after about 10 minutes.. don't know what else to try; no spare graphics cards laying around and the fact it's related to the patch makes me think its something that EA/Dice need to fix. I.E. I'm never going to be able to play BF2 again unless I spend more money or wait for it to be accidentally fixed by another patch.

Update:
Nothing seems to work but I have found that using LOW (including all sound options and EAX off) settings means I can play singleplayer for about 20 minutes, but it still crashes in the end anyway.
I'll see if I can narrow the option that is inducing this timer effect down.
It is NOT temperature, I opened my case and touched all major components and regions of my GFX card and none of it was even close to being hot, barely warm in fact.
I've tried underclocking my system a little and I can play for longer periods but I've only just diagnosed the TV-Camera crash whic I might have been occasionally thinking was the "normal" CTD so I'll have to go back and check some other things AGAIN. My annoying-hardware sense is tingling and telling me it's something to do with sound card or just the 1.2 patch making BF2 hate my graphics card. Joy.
Update 2:
Left singleplayer running for a while, all seemed to be fine, but as soon as you actually start shooting or anything.. CTD. Starting to think this isn't worth all the hassle, I only patch so I can play on ranked servers, I could just revert to pre-1.2 and play in peace ffs.
