putting together a build for a friend.

this will be mostly for video editing, DVD making/encoding/burning. plus your usual home / web stuff, and possibly some light gaming.

OS will be vista home premium x64

I'm trying to keep the price decent.
he also will be adding a 22" lcd.
I suggested a cheaper case, but he likes the antec 900 (which is probably better since the video card does not have external exhaust)

I don't think I can justify going to core i7, because that will raise the price another $4-500 considering the price of i7 mobos, ddr3, and cpu.
The 1gb video card was only $20 more than the 512mb.

please post a decent priced power supply if you have one in mind.
also do you think I should go with ddr 1066 ram instead of the 800?

thoughts?

I'd get a gigabyte mobo, Only because I have had a few issues with various Asus mobos and never had a single issue with a gigabyte.

If its only light gaming i would suggest getting a cheaper graphics card (maybe a 9600GT or 4670) and upgrading to one of the 2nd gen C2Qs (45nm)with SSE4 like the Q9550, might benefit when doing photo and video apps with that.
If you cant fit it into the budget maybe look at the phenom IIs?

Nothing wrong with the power supply you have there but you wont need a 650W a 450W corsair unit would do fine.

Ive had no problems with asus mobos however if your looking at that then you should have checked the combo deals as ive managed to price it up around $10 cheaper but with 1066 DDR2 instead of 800 DDR2 and everything else has stayed the same

....And 1066MT/s memory will only be of benefit to him if he plans on doing some crazy overclocking.

Also, the spot for the 24 pin on that mobo is right in the center, instead of the side, so cable mangement will be a *****...

Also, its completely up to you if you want to run 1066Mhz Memory, I would suggest G.Skill or OCZ if you do. When you put it in the system will recognize it as 800Mhz Memory, just go into the BIOS and set the memory Ratio to 2:3 and it will now boot at 1066.

I think your looking at the wrong motherboard. The 24pin connector is on the side of the P5Q Pro.

The Q8300 won't overclock as far as the Q6600.

That is true, however he never mentioned anything about overclocking, and from what it sounds like he is using it for business needs. With a business PC you want efficiency and speed at stock settings for a more reliable system. The last thing you want to do is put stress on the system that could possibly end up in a crash that would leave you without a PC for a couple weeks.

A stable business PC is important.

So? People get so caught up in the cache when there is really no impact.

Cache has a very huge impact. I suppose it depends on what you're doing, but I imagine down the road applications will be taking advantage of that extra cache.
