The co-op Special Ops mode is also coming back.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer

Infinity Ward revealed some additional details about the multiplayer component to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. We now know that there will be a new third-person playlist, the addition of a three-person Raid mode, and return of the two-player co-op mode, Special Ops.

The third-person mode will drastically change the way you play. Anybody who has played a first-person shooter and a third-person game will know that third-person allows you to take in more of your surroundings. This includes things like corner peaking without exposing yourself to danger. It will be very interesting to see how the Call of Duty fanbase takes to third-person, which is a drastic departure for the company.

Raid is a three-person cooperative mode that will rely heavily on communication and coordination with your teammates. Think of these as challenging scenarios that include plenty of combat and puzzles to solve. While it won't be available at launch, Raids will be out before the end of the year.

Those who like co-op gameplay will be happy to hear that Special Ops is coming back. Infinity Ward and Activision say that this mode is being revamped from what was offered in the past. There will now be "large-scale hot zones" where players will carry out missions. Sadly, there weren't any more details about this one included in the new reveal.

All modes will get to mess around in the weapon customization system called Gunsmith. This year's Gunsmith implementation has been expanded to allow for "unprecedented opportunities for customization." The interface will be snappier and more streamlined so that you won't have to wade through several sub-menus just to swap parts.

Ricochet, the custom anti-cheat built for Call of Duty, will also get an update with Modern Warfare 2. The anti-cheat is now built on a new unified security platform which, as Activision claims, will allow the anti-cheat team to update the system more frequently.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have a beta starting on September 16 for those on PlayStation. Xbox and PC users will get to try out the beta starting September 22. If multiplayer isn't your thing, keep in mind that pre-orders for the game will get to play the campaign a week early.
