  • EA CEO Touts the 'Tremendous Live Service' of Next Battlefield

Next game to include a "connected" multiplayer and single-player experience.

Now that the last Battlefield game is in a relatively good state, it's time again to begin looking forward to the next entry in the franchise. EA started to talk about the next Battlefield game during EA's latest investor call on May 7, 2024.

During the call, the CEO of Electronic Arts, Andrew Wilson, said that the next Battlefield will be a "tremendous live service." There has been a collective groan from Battlefield fans upon hearing that but you have to keep in mind that this call was for investors. It could be that the next Battlefield game brings no more of a live service than the past few Battlefield titles have been.

The past few games, especially Battlefield 2042, were "live service" in the sense that they had a steady stream of updates, content, and microtransactions. It may not have been a lot of content that came out over the game's life, but it was still fairly steady all things considered. When it comes to the next game, all we can do is wait to see how live-servicey this one will end up being.

Wilson says that he's been playing internal builds of the next Battlefield game with the team. He says that the largest development team in the history of Battlefield is working on this next entry. That team could have been even larger, had an entire Battlefield studio not been shuttered and over 670 people not laid off just a few months back.

Wilson told investors that the remaining Battlefield teams have "listened to the community, have learned valuable lessons, and are driving to the future." Studios such as DICE, Ripple Effect, Motive, and Criterion are working on the next Battlefield game. These teams are working to create "a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer and single-player experiences."

In a recent visit to the Battlefield teams, Wilson says that he "couldn't be more excited about what they showed and what we were able to play."

Again, this is all a lot of hype talk for investors. We really know nothing about what the next Battlefield game will truly entail. There is also no word on when we might expect to see an actual reveal of the next Battlefield game. It also probably goes without saying, but fans of the series should really keep any and all expectations and hype in check no matter what is said or promised ahead of the next game's release. We've all been through this same song and dance several times now with the latest Battlefield game releases and each time the game is in a totally garbage state for months after release.

Considering 2042 might as well be called "Battlefield: Dead", that works for me.
