There will be new types of robotic dinosaurs coming when Horizon Forbidden West launches on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on February 18, 2021. These new and updated dinos will include different behaviors, abilities, and weaknesses that apparently just weren't possible in the first game.

A new PlayStation Blog posting from Guerrilla Games reveals some new details about a number of the mechanical foes you will face in Horizon Forbidden West. One of the examples provided by the team is in how Aloy can utilize the dust kicked up by the machines as cover. She will be concealed in this kicked up dust cloud, allowing her to sneak up on enemies.

The machines are now also far more mobile than in the previous game. They are now able to swim, jump, and even hold on to surfaces. Aloy also comes packed with new abilities to combat the more mobile foes she will encounter. She will be able to make use of smoke bombs and also has the ability to climb more surfaces.

Old foes with new abilities aren't the only things Aloy will encounter in her adventures. There will, of course, be entirely new machines to tackle with. There is the Sunwing, a massive flying machine that utilizes its wingspan to collect solar energy. These foes are vulnerable, yet alert, when harvesting those rays.

The machines also now have several ways to be defeated. There are more obvious weak points or interactive components for each machine compared to the first game. Aloy is also able to override more machine types this go around, which will allow her to ride them or change their behavior.

One of the new machines is named the Tremortusk, a mammoth-like machine that can use its tusks to attack up close or it can use elemental weapons for ranged attacks.

“It reminds me of a mixture of war elephants and a huge siege tower that was used to attack fortresses in medieval times: hard to destroy, slow moving, and a lot of fire power,” recollects Blake (Politeski, principal machine designer). “This generated the idea for the Tremortusk, which is a well armored but slow machine, almost an unstoppable force. In Horizon Forbidden West, human enemy factions can control machines, so it seemed like a natural fit to combine the two and make our own spin on ‘war elephants’, with a platform on top that humans can fire at Aloy from.

“To circle back to the machine (eco-)system, it was created to keep balance on Earth and ensure that humans cannot wipe out life again. Tremortusks were created as combat machines — protecting other machine species so they can do what they were designed to do without human interference.”
