Square Enix, alongside French studio Cyber Group Studios, are working on a new animated series based on Final Fantasy 9. This is according to a new report by Kidscreen. Cyber Group will be handling the heavy lifting on this one, handling the creation, distribution, licensing, and merchandise.

Details like the number of episodes have not yet been revealed just yet. Cyber Group Studios CEO Pierre Sissmann says that they hope to have the show in production by the end of 2021 or the start of 2022. The show will reportedly be aimed towards children between the ages of eight and 13. Sissmann says that the studio is getting ready to pitch the show to broadcasters.

Final Fantasy 9 was first released back in 2000 for the original PlayStation. Despite its art style, it really isn't a "kids" game due to the story and topics handled throughout the game. So this new series being aimed towards kids as young as eight seems a little bizarre. Though it does make a bit more sense when you find out that Final Fantasy, as a franchise, has sold over 154 million copies.
