Details on new maps and playable characters.
Resident Evil Resistance

New details were revealed today for Resident Evil Resistance, the upcoming asymmetrical 4v1 co-op game from Capcom. The last we heard about the game was that it would be bundled with the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake as a "free" bonus. We still don't know if Capcom had always intended to bundle Resistance with Resident Evil 3 or if the decision was made from a lack of faith in it being able to sell well on its own. Whatever the case is, Resident Evil Resistance is now definitely going to end up in the hands of a lot of players now as a result.

Today sees details shared about two new Masterminds and some additional locations that should be familiar to long time Resident Evil series fans. The two new Masterminds are none other than Alex Wesker and Ozwell Spencer.

Who exactly is Alex Wesker? The name should ring a bell for those that played through Resident Evil Revelations 2. As an aside, Revelations 2 is actually a very good Resident Evil title and a game that self-proclaimed fans of the franchise shouldn't pass up. With that said, Alex Wesker has a bit of a Jigsaw thing going on. She enjoys putting test subjects through a variety of experiments and subjecting them to various psychological horrors. Yeah, to say she would fit well in Resident Evil Resistance would be putting it mildly.

Like all Masterminds, she will be able to play traps and manipulate the map to try and slow down and take out the four hopeful survivors. According to Capcom, Alex will be able to "call upon a vicious carnivorous plant called Yateveo" This plant can't move once placed into the world but it can is a "powerful obstruction that keeps Survivors from their objective."

The fourth Mastermind reveal is Ozwell E. Spencer, the old multi-millionaire that fans of the franchise have probably heard about. He's only been a central figure to the entire franchise from the very start. Afterall, the first Resident Evil takes place largely throughout a mansion he had built. Though used to having others do evil on his behalf, Resistance will see Spencer taking a more hands-on approach. Unlike the other Masterminds, Spencer doesn't summon a bioweapon that he can control directly. Instead, he creates a Disintegration Field that "severely damages any Survivor who passes through it."

And yes, I am fully aware that his name is spelled Oswell E. Spencer in literally everywhere else. However, this press release from Capcom has it spelled Ozwell. Either they changed how it's spelled for this game or this was a mistake made repeatedly throughout today's press release. Either way, I'm keeping it as presented to me just in case the spelling really has been changed.

In addition to today's new Mastermind reveals comes two new map locations that Resident Evil Resistance players will try to make their way through. These maps are a Casino and an Abandoned Park. You can see some new artwork for these maps below along with additional details about each map.

Resident Evil Resistance pits a Mastermind against four Survivors. The Mastermind is able to place down traps, enemy spawns, alter the map layout, and even assume control over some recognizable bioweapons to directly take on the Survivors. Survivors have their own unique abilities and can also obviously make use of weapons and items to aid them in reaching their goal.

This game is bundled with Resident Evil 3. Both titles are slated for release on April 3, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.

  • Casino: An entertainment facility for thrill seekers… and insidious Masterminds. Its still-operating slot machines and chips strewn across the floor tell the eerie tale of how hastily it was deserted during the collapse of Raccoon City.
  • Abandoned Park: A horror-themed park located on the outskirts of Raccoon City. It too was left abandoned when zombies and bioweapons overran Raccoon City. Now, monsters both real and imagined now patiently await visitors.
