Borderlands GOTY 2019

The original Borderlands is getting a big updated release.

The original Borderlands was released back in 2009. On April 3, 2019, that game will return as Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition. According to 2K, this will be free to everyone that owns Borderlands on PC via Steam. This also marks the release date for the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In addition to including all of the previously released content, there will be some actual gameplay adjustments made in this release.

The inventory will be streamlined. There will now be a minimap similar to Borderlands 2 that you can toggle on or off as you wish. You'll also now automatically pick up stuff like ammo and health from the ground. There will also now be support for four-player local co-op, though I'm not sure that the PC version will also have it.

Other changes include a more challenging final boss. With this greater challenge comes greater reward. It's not yet clear what this actually means just yet, but I'm assuming it will mean far more loot drops than before.

SHiFT codes are also being added to the first game. Those who played Borderlands 2 already know what to expect with these. Plus, those that played Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel on PC will get 75 free Golden Keys to redeem. They will also get two random new weapons when they create a new Vault Hunter.

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition also adds in six new legendary weapons. You can unlock these by redeeming those Golden Keys or by killing bosses. Players will also get more cosmetics to toy around with. Before, you only had color variations with which to customize your character in the first game. Now, there will be more options ala Borderlands 2 that include five swappable pieces of head gear.

If you don't yet own the game, you may want to hurry up and pick it up now on the cheap (no word yet on how much this GOTY version will cost). 2K says that all you need for this upgrade is the base game. That means, you will get all of the Borderlands DLC for free if you only own the base game when this update hits next week.
