I recently installed the Jetpack mod, and got a tank airborne, and then let it crash into the ocean. I guess because of the weight of the tank, the "camera" view followed the tank down as it sunk. I was extremely surprised to see that the ocean/sea floor dropped off much as you'd expect in real life. It goes down quite a way.
The reason this surprised me was because the first time I used the Battlefield Recorder, I started out "underground" and saw that in Dalian Plant that the water continued underneath the entire battlefield. So I figured it was just easier to do that then render it away or try to contain it. But if stuff like that is done, then why would they bother creating a basin deep enough for a sub or at least underwater diving? Why not just have a flat bottom?
Or am I reading too much into it? What are the chances of a modder creating a sub that launches from the inside of the ship off the coast of Dalian Plant? It'd certainly help at times when the ship is being attacked and is the last spawn point.
PS: Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did a search for "ocean" and "sea", and ran out of ideas about what to look for. I've already seen the words "sub" and "submarine" used a billion times so that wouldn't really help.
I like the idea. I would play the mod for sure if someone would do it.
It would be like the old G.I. Joes. Frogmen and 2 man subs!
The more I think about it, the more possible it seems. I wish I knew if the battleship was anchored (not literally, I mean if it's an extension of the "ground" sort of like an island), and whether it'd be possible to make it move or not. The water physics are all there, there's no reason to think it's impossible to implant a new vehicle (sub).
The carrier (assuming that's what you mean by battleship) is a bunch of static objects from what I can tell. How possible it would be to combine those into something mobile is beyond me, I've never dealt with modelling objects and the like. I do know it's not just a vehicle that we can't enter though. :-P (how nice that would be though.)
As far as the water, the water is defined by a number in most maps and is rendered at that height on the whole map. If it's under the terrain, you just don't see it. If it's above the terrain you see, well, water. The file can be found in the .con files in the server.zip file of each map, just look for a function dealing with water level.
As far as Battlefield and underwater vehicles, I wish you luck, as I don't think Battlefield is extremely happy about underwater objects. I tried making an F-18 that was controllable as a submarine instead of a jet, but that didn't end well.I did, however, get the RIB to be barely controllable underwater, and the fog is changable underwater too (you'll notice everything gets very dark once you get underwater), so it would be interesting to see.
Yeah I kinda figured the carrier (I knew battleship was wrong but couldn't think of the right name) was static too. Especially since it has that bottom port (where I'd expect the sub to be docked). Is it possible to have something like that on a real ship? With open doors to the rest of the ship? Seems physically impossible unless it was just a stairwell to the top of the ship instead of having openings to the various levels of the ship as well.
I honestly wouldn't even have brought the topic up if the tank hadn't sunk. I thought the water had 80% bouancy or something (just enough to destroy a non-floating vehicle). Even the aquatic vehicles seem to depress into the ground a little when on dry land (when they're unoccupied), so I figured the bottom rendering was "soft" to make it work with the water better.
Can you tell us more about that experiment you did with the F-18? Do you have any screenshots of the mod attempt, and what made you give up?
Anyone else think they put that big opening on the rear of the carrier for something a lilttle bit bigger? Like say a LCAC(hovercraft) and then dumped the idea and decided to fill it with ribs.
The opening in the rear of the carrier is for spawn camping enemy APC'sOriginally Posted by gogtaylor

The underwater areas in BF1942 were horrible looking! Then again, you were supposed to be driving into them.
Anyway, a sub would be cool, and it would be cool to scubadive, but you wouldn't want to put the majority of flags underwater. I mean, you try to heal a teammate with the defibulators and electricute everyone in a radius of who-knows-how-many feet (yourself included). Not to mention the weapon selection would be grossly limited for an underwater fight.
I'm beginning to think it's totally possible. Someone mod it. A golden acorn to the man who brings me a working submarine!
