  • Most Planned DLC for Final Fantasy XV Cancelled as Game Director Hajime Tabata Quits

Woo man, last night was one hell of a roller coaster for fans of Final Fantasy XV. Square Enix held a special event focused solely on just what is going on with Final Fantasy XV, its future content, and everything else. It just so happens that the "everything else" is game director Hajime Tabata quitting Square Enix and most of the planned DLC episodes being cancelled.

    Oh no.

Right now, Final Fantasy XV Episode Ardyn is still planned to be released in March 2019 for all platforms. However, the episodes that were planned for Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis have all been cancelled. All four of these episodes were originally planned for release throughout 2019. These episodes would have provided a bunch of additional story and even included an alternate ending to the main game.

Square Enix announced last night that Tabata had left the company back in October. He was also the head of Luminous Productions, which was working on the planned DLC. Tabata is now apparently looking to start his own company. Akio Ofuji, global brand director of Final Fantasy XV, says in a YouTube video that Luminous Productions is shifting from DLC development to working on an entirely new game. This news also comes just a day after Square announced a $33 million loss due to Luminous Productions.

Tabata issued a written statement about his departure.

It’s almost going to be 2 whole years since the release of FFXV. I honestly believe the reason we were able to get this far is because of all you loyal fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Today, I have a personal announcement to make to all of you. I, Hajime Tabata, will be resigning from Luminous Productions and the Square Enix Group as of October 31, 2018.

I was able to gain so much experience with my time at Square Enix. Every title I was able to be a part of means a lot to me. However, FFXV stood out from that group as it was a special project for me which I went all-in.

Therefore, I decided to take this opportunity to officially announce my departure from FFXV to all the fans who have supported the title across the globe.

In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal.

As production of Episode Ardyn continues and Luminous Productions works on new projects, I felt that it was time for me to hand over the torch to the next generation group of talented and trustworthy colleagues and believe that they will create something amazing.

From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans.

I would like to thank everyone who continue to support FFXV and those who have also supported myself personally.

As noted, this isn't quite the end yet for Final Fantasy XV, but it's damn close. Episode Ardyn is out in March for every platform. There is also a stand-alone release coming for Comrades but only on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Sorry, PC players. There is also some Final Fantasy XIV tie-in content coming.

I've included a bunch of additional information from the press release below. Also included are some new trailers that go along with each announcement.

Slated for release in March 2019, EPISODE ARDYN offers players the opportunity to step into the role of FINAL FANTASY XV’s main antagonist. Set before the events of FINAL FANTASY XV, players will learn more about Ardyn’s backstory in a story of death and restoration. The release will be accompanied by a special anime episode titled, FINAL FANTASY XV EPISODE ARDYN - PROLOGUE. View the trailer for the “Episode Ardyn” DLC here:
