So, one million units in 24 hours in just one region? That is actually more than any other console or handheld had in the entire first month of sales. The PlayStation 3 sold just 197,000 in the first two weeks of being available, largely stalled due to lack of hardware availability. The Nintendo Wii sold 600,000 in its first eight days. Last year, the Wii U sold 425,000 units within its first week of being on sale.
Even with that strong initial showing from the Wii U, the PlayStation 4 is already on pace to surpass it in total number of units sold by the end of the year. Right now, the Wii U has sold just 3.91 million units as of the end of September. If the PS4 opens to similar figure in the remaining regions, it will easily surpass that number.
Then again, the Xbox One is ready for launch on November 22 in North America. We'll see how sales of that console stack up.
