  • PC Gamer and other Future Publications Accused of Taking Bribes for Review Scores

    0 Not allowed! Not allowed!
A freelance writer, Rich Stanton, whom has done work for various publications, went on Twitter last night and in a drunken fit went on about how Future Publishing has altered review scores and taken bribes from publishers for better review scores. Notably, he says that Future Publishing (owners of PC Gamer, Edge, OXM, and numerous other online and physical publications) have been taking bribes for quite some time from publishers for better review scores.

Neogaf outlines some of the more choice selections from Stanton's impromptu Q&A session from last night.

Edge gave GTA IV [10] but the review didn’t “@CiaranMac90: @RichStanton Just give us the worst story on Future you have and get some rest!”
I’m genuinely amazed that nobody has picked up on the fact that GTA4 got a 9 which became Rockstar’s much sought-after [10] in Edge.

They control everything “@theubermod: @RichStanton Do publishers/platform holders 'pay' for covers? In either ad spend or access.”

Yes “@helloimandrew: @RichStanton do review scores in future publications sometimes magically change before it hits the self”

Homefront, less obviously. Most is Driv3rgate “@Tim__Lane: @RichStanton game that got most obviously dodgy reviews?”

Rockstar, without question. “@LittleJuiceBox1: @RichStanton Who were the dodgiest PRs for doing deals (review scores etc)?”

Yes. Future will do anything to accommodate advertisers. “@LewieP: @RichStanton have you witnessed any dodgy deals?”

PC Gamer asked me to take some photos of something very specific. A wall of concept art. I asked permission, and did so.
Valve went nuts. This wasn’t approved! Do you know what PC Gamer’s editor, Tim Edwards, did?
He denied I had ever been asked to do it. Said PCG were merely the innocent recipient. Lied, in other words. Cunt.

Yes. Then lost 2/3rds of their traffic! Idiots. “@iambeano: @RichStanton Did Future think the EDGE forum community was a waste of time?”

CVG. They deliberately misquote devs, and claim it’s a mistake after the hits “@DilutedDante: @RichStanton worst games mag/site?”

Those are some very damning accusations there from Stanton. It remains to be seen, however, if any of these accusations are true or not.

      I can believe this.

Wasnt there an article about two years ago about how these big companies would fly in the reviewers and put them up in hotels that had everything for them and the reviewers actually spent about an hour with the people and the rest of the week doing whatever on their dime?

These tweets seemt o re-affirm that article.

Also, as gamers, dont we make fun of the "big" reviewer scores? When BF3 reviews hit the board and they were lower than MW3, I remember everyone laughing about it and saying how its obvious who IW/Activision had paid off. The reviewers that gave MW3 a 10 or 9.X pretty much rank and file gave BF3 the half mark or more lower.

So with the rank and file scores and the older article about the reviewers, I doubt this one is far off.

Capi haven`t all of the recent "big" games all gotten stellar reviews? Wheather 9, 9.5, 0r 10("There are no 10s"). Have any games since BF2 really earned that high of a score? In my opinion Hell No! BC2, CSGO, BF3, RO2,CODx, Arma2, CrysisWars, FrontlinesFoW, LFD2, I own them all, and many more. I am sure the average review score here would be 9.0.
Looking back on how few hours I played some of these games. I don`t see how such a high score was warrented.

P.S. of course there is Payola. Bin going on in the music industyfor a long time. I am not supprised.

Oh sure. I wasnt even going to bother to really dive into that. You can tell who bought whom though based on the reviews.

It is about money. We all claim that reviews mean nothing and we ignore them, but its our tastes we go by vs. reviews others go by. I am VERY picky in games and some that many thought were great, I thought was boring and I couldnt get into it. Same the other way. Its a matter of tastes.

Damn it, I wanted to stay out of this conversation, but CptainCrunch's post compelled me to further his points. Ok so in terms of accommodations for journalists, that's pretty much confirmed but publisher/developer budgets usually limit to a couple of days, and in some cases no airfare is provided so it's a paid day-off at most. Usually journalists provide disclosure for these things to maintain independence, as any potential bias that may occur needs to be disclosed to allow the viewers/readers come to their own conclusions about the objectivity of the article/video.

Unfortunately, that is only limited to "usually" as there are companies who enjoy these occasional perks and maintain business relationships (favor the publishers'/developers' products) in order to obtain early review copies, as well as bypass review embargoes and publish articles earlier than everyone else. And on rare occasions, journalists will fake a review to blatantly advertise a product (however, these are easy to spot as it is unlikely the article will follow the usual review format).

It's also worth noting that Metacritic scores aren't necessarily accurate either, as even the lowest-budget developers can convince a few friends to bump up the score (would've worked if the game wasn't released on a mass-market like Steam and played/hated by everyone). And in the end, all of this is happening, because reviews DO MATTER (as much as we hate to admit this).

So what's my point? Turn to Zips; his review of Black Mesa: Source proves he can stay objective and unbiased. Go TGN/CS-Nation/Anti-TGNTV go!

(All of the links are from The Penny-Arcade Report, GameTrailers.com, MetaCritic, Kotaku, and Shacknews. Sorry, I don't have examples from TGN so there will be some conflict of interest. Feel free to delink them or delete this post and I will immediately understand without any complaints. I feel like I'm crossing a line to be honest, but am risking it anyways.)

Damn it CptainCrunch, I really didn't want to type up this post... I just wanted lunch. Why did I go to the comments?

HAHA, I was kinda hoping you would comment K-16! My dastardly plan worked!

So yeah, in conclusion, Reviews matter and it means big money.

Also, people do have their favorites. A review wont change the mind of that. Nothing wrong with that.

I also think that what is the market makes a difference. You know if you buy CoD for Xbox, you're going to probably have a good time and you know what you are going to get. So you can compare that game with others that have been/are going to be released and CoD is a safe purchase or it may be the only good thing out there.

Also, not just CoD, but insert whatever popular series of whatever game type you want. Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, MGS, Halo,Battlefield, MoH, etc...

So, its not cut and dry and there are more things involved than just a review, but its a pretty big deal.

Just a note, since I have my own opinions on the matter, but every time I review a game that was given to me by a publisher or studio, I always make sure I make a note of it at the bottom of the reviews.

I think it's a requirement? I thought it was at least.

I don't know if its a requirement or not, but its good that you do it.

CptainCrunch - Damn you and your cunning plan.......... Thanks for reading and approving of it.

Zips - Unfortunately, because there is no requirement for journalists to provide disclosure on any potential independence issues, there are articles from other websites/magazines published where we were not informed of certain things that happen behind the scenes that we want to know about. This is why I mentioned disclosure is usually provided, but not always. The risk of readers/viewers questioning your integrity does happen if you have great business relationships with all sorts of publishers/developers (imagine how many disclosures you would have on a website if everyone likes you and gives you perks?), yet disclosures do help you reduce liability on anyone questioning your integrity as there is little chance of conspiracy when you are the first to bring it up.

In other words, if I call bull**** on your article, you can point out the disclosure you provided which pretty much confirms my suspicion, yet no harm is done to your integrity as you weren't hiding anything in the first place, and I would be seen as a lazy complainer who doesn't read the whole article. Disclosures are an optional note as they are a double-edged sword (too many makes you look just as bad to both consumers AND publishers/developers), so there is reason why not all journalists do it.

And now we've come back full-circle to the origin of this news post, and why crap like this happens in the first place, yet none of us are even remotely surprised.

Umm... On a side-note, I think it would be more preferable if the note is at the top of the review so people are less likely to miss it, but if it makes the header posts (front page) look bad, then never mind. I'm just making a suggestion, but not requesting a change in review format.

With that and what K-16 posted up, it makes it hard to not believe what Stanton mentions.
