I stopped watching movies and TV shows a few years ago, after realizing that the reality is better.

Today's ridiculous news:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/sep/23/sweden-helicopter-gang-robbery-cash

Helicopter gang raids cash depot in Sweden from above

Getaway aircraft hovers for 15 minutes as thieves hoist millions of krona to rooftop

The helicopter hovered for 15 minutes, waiting for the men to load the bags of stolen cash from the rooftop. Meanwhile, a police Swat team attempted to gain entry to the cash depot using a battering ram.

Stockholm police were unable to deploy their own helicopters because a bag containing suspected explosives had been left at their hangar. Small spiked objects had also been spread out on the road near the depot in an attempt to hinder the approach of police vehicles.

The UK's largest haul of Anglo-Saxon treasure has been discovered buried beneath a field in Staffordshire.

Experts say the collection of 1,500 gold and silver pieces, which may date to the 7th Century, is unparalleled in size and worth "a seven figure sum".

It has been declared treasure by South Staffordshire coroner Andrew Haigh, meaning it belongs to the Crown.

Terry Herbert, who found it on farmland using a metal detector, said it "was what metal detectorists dream of".

It may take more than a year for it to be valued.

Why? Why not me?

Why? Why not me?

So... Let me get this straight. You spend your days as an avid treasurehunter by hobby or profession, you find a large chest of gold and silver, worth over a million pounds, and you dont even check the laws which basically would screw you over allowing the Queen to take it from you?

Treasures belong to the "state" here aswell, but people actually smuggle that sh!t across the border, because honestly- why would anyone ever let go of that kind of money? I wouldnt, and I wouldnt judge anyone who did.

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland on Friday approved a law making chemical castration mandatory for pedophiles in some cases, sparking criticism from human rights groups.

Under the law, sponsored by Poland's center-right government, pedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years or a close relative would have to undergo chemical therapy on their release from prison.

"The purpose of this action is to improve the mental health of the convict, to lower his libido and thereby to reduce the risk of another crime being committed by the same person," the government said in a statement.

Although it is good intent, I don't think it would work. Some people should be put to death for good, or jailed until their death. It's about the mind, not the desire.

Council hires hoodie spies to rummage through bins and see what is being thrown away

But none of the inhabitants of Cedar Close, Irchester, near Wellingborough, Northants, had received any notice from their council about what was going on.
Resident Gillian Barnett, 61, said the snoopers made her feel 'very uncomfortable'.
She said: 'Three young men parked outside my house and just started going through my bins - I thought they were pinching my rubbish. It was very suspicious.
'We haven't had a leaftlet or a letter, all my neighbours were going round asking each other what was happening.
'If they'd had "County Council" marked on their van it would have been less concerning but as it was nobody knew what was going on.
'It made me worry about what I had put in the bin - I didn't know I was going to be fined or what.
'I heard this was happening in nearby streets like Pine Close too.'
Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, slammed the council for using 'Big Brother' tactics.

Empire State Building lights anger China critics
By MARCUS FRANKLIN (AP) – 2 hours ago
NEW YORK — The Empire State Building has been lit in red and yellow in honor of communist China's 60th anniversary, amid criticism of the gesture.
The building is routinely lit with different colors to mark holidays and big events, but opponents have questioned whether Wednesday's lighting was the right gesture to commemorate a country with a poor human rights record.
Several people protested outside the skyscraper during a ceremonial lighting attended by Chinese dignitaries earlier in the day.
Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner (WEE'-nur) of New York said the lights should not be used to pay tribute to what he called "a nation with a shameful history on human rights."
A spokeswoman said in a statement that the building celebrates many world cultures with its lights.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
NEW YORK (AP) — Critics of China's communist government are protesting plans to light the top of New York's Empire State Building red and yellow to honor that nation's 60th anniversary.
Several supporters of Tibet protested Wednesday outside the iconic building, where a lighting ceremony is planned. The building often changes its lighting colors to mark holidays and big events.
Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner (WEE'-nur) of New York says the lights should not be used to pay tribute to what he called "a nation with a shameful history on human rights."
Building spokeswoman Marisa Picker had no immediate comment.

Children can 'imagine away' pain

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8299719.stm

Children can be taught to use their imagination to tackle frequent bouts of stomach pain, research shows.

A relaxation-type CD, asking children to imagine themselves in scenarios like floating on a cloud led to dramatic improvements in abdominal pain.

The US researchers said the technique worked particularly well in children as they have such fertile imaginations.

It has been estimated that frequent stomach pain with no identifiable cause affects up to one in five children.

The research, published in the journal Pediatrics, follows on from studies showing hypnosis is an effective treatment for a range of conditions known as functional abdominal pain, which includes things like irritable bowel syndrome.

In this study, the children had 20 minute sessions of "guided imagery" - a technique which prompts the subject to imagine things which will reduce their discomfort.

I think I'm getting too old for this.

The Saga of the Suspended 6-Year-Old
October 14, 2009 01:06 PM ET | Zach Miners | Permanent Link | Print
Last week, 6-year-old Zachary Christie, a student at Downes Elementary School in Newark, Del., decided to bring a camping utensil that can serve as a fork, spoon, bottle opener, and folding knife to school to use at lunch. He had recently joined the Cub Scouts and was excited to use the tool, but when it was handed over to the principal, he received a 45-day suspension in the district's reform school. The school board has since overturned the decision, the Associated Press reports, but the episode could lead the district—and other schools across the country with zero-tolerance policies—to re-evaluate such procedures.

6-year-old Colorado boy found alive after setting balloon adrift

CNN) -- The 6-year-old Colorado boy who is believed to have set adrift a helium balloon Thursday, prompting ground and air searches, has been found alive, authorities said.
The balloon landed south of Prospect Springs, Colorado, on Thursday afternoon.

Falcon Heene was found in a box in the attic of his family's Fort Collins home, according to authorities.

People across the world watched Thursday as the homemade helium balloon soared 7,000 feet over eastern Colorado for more than an hour and a half.

A sibling said he saw the Falcon get into the craft Thursday morning, authorities said.

But the boy was not inside the craft when it made a soft landing near Keenesburg, about 60 miles from its starting point, at 1:35 p.m. (3:35 p.m. ET).

Space Junk Crashes Through Man's Roof
A falling object that landed in a man's house has been identified as space debris.
by Chris Iaquinta
October 16, 2009 - "Look, up in the sky up! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's…...it's coming right for us!" These were the types of thoughts going through UK retiree Peter Welton's mind when a flaming piece of debris came crashing through his roof back in July. Now, after months of research on the object, experts have determined that the football-sized clump of junk had traveled hundreds of miles from outer space on its journey to smash through some old guy's house. Cosmic coincidence or pissed off aliens? Let's find out.

Virginia Man Charged With Indecent Exposure After Making Coffee Naked in Kitchen

A Springfield man is facing indecent exposure charges after police say he stood naked inside his home as a 7-year-old boy and his mother walked by.

Twenty-nine-year-old Eric Williamson denies any wrongdoing and says any exposure was accidental.

"Yes, I wasn't wearing any clothes but I was alone, in my own home and just got out of bed. It was dark and I had no idea anyone was outside looking in at me," Williamson told MyFoxDC.com in his defense. "I'm a loving dad — any of my friends would tell you that," Williamson said. "There is not a chance on this planet I would ever, ever do anything like that to a kid."

But Fairfax County Police see it differently. Spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings said the woman and her son first saw Williamson standing naked inside his doorway as they walked along a path outside his home. Police say Williamson then followed the two from inside his home and exposed himself again through a large front window.

Police would not pursue a case based on inadvertent exposure, Jennings said.

Officers were out in Williamson's neighborhood lWednesday ooking for others who might have seen him

The charge is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.

Do you think that Mr. Williamson should sue the woman for violation of his privacy?

'Distracted' pilots fail to land

The plane's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been taken from the plane and are being sent to the board's laboratory in Washington, DC.

Passenger Andrea Allmon: 'The plane was swarmed by police'

Questions have been raised about how the pilots could have missed any warning signals - including city lights and cockpit displays showing that they were no longer on the right path.

The NTSB's former chief investigator into major accidents, Ben Berman said pilots learned to become instinctively aware of when they needed to start landing preparations and it would take a "fairly dramatic event" to distract them, AP reported.

The plane left San Diego at 1500 local time (2200 GMT) for what would normally be a three-hour journey.

Air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the plane approximately an hour before it was due to reach its destination of Minneapolis-St Paul International/Wold-Chamberlain Airport.

Mmmm... I wonder what distracted them.......

"The crew stated they were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness," the board said in a news release.

Vicki Alex's love of maths had helped her pass the time on many a long car journey. Little did she know it would one day save her life.

The 15-year-old was woken from a coma when her father began asking her simple sums.

The schoolgirl had been unconscious for three days and had failed to respond to other efforts to stimulate her brain.

But she was stirred by the simple maths questions and soon regained full consciousness.

Bear kills two top Hizb militants in Kashmir

According to the Srinagar based Defence spokesman, Col JS Brar, troops of the Shopian based 9 Rashtriya Rifles recovered two dead bodies from a cave hideout in Dandaloo Nar area of Shopian. On closer scrutiny, troops found that both of the dead men were armed with AK-47 rifles and rug sacks.

Now it's official. AK-47 < bear.
And, even bears don't like terrorists.

That's why their circulation is only second to The Sun.

I usually don't read US newspapers as well. I don't know who still read them. Newspaper business in the US is dying because of changing business environment, even though they themselves are to be blamed mostly. To be honest, I'd rather trust newspaper whose editorial board is profit-minded, over elitist-minded ones.

Meh, I bought the Independent this weekend because I hate reading broadsheet in a cafe. It's very similar to the Guardian, same company produce it. It was all about climate change, animal cruelty and other green things.

Whilst they are interesting, some stories that were seemingly quite important were relegated behind "Look at how our animals are abused (cue archived battery farm picture)"

Get my drift?

We used to get the Independent but it made everyting incredibly boring. I'd consider the the Guardian the most centre newspaper, but admittedly I read the Times the most (online). At the end of the day its just news, I just laugh at the opinions of the writers I dont agree with.

Pupils living on remote Scottish island take world's shortest commuter flight to school ... just 96 seconds

Children living on a remote Scottish island are to hitch a lift to school on what is said to be the world's shortest flight, it was announced today.

The plane journey from Papa Westray to Westray in the Orkney Islands takes just 96 seconds, covering a distance of little over a mile.

Six teenagers are to take the Loganair service to Westray Junior High after the local ferry service was suspended.

That's pretty much the exact argument used by everyone who's a Jessica Alba fan that happens to be attracted to her. Or really any celebrity who's dumb as a pile of bricks. Actually, that's not really fair, the bricks can actually be useful- like when I need to build a home, or bust in to a mafia-owned drugstore and make all their money are belong to I, or kill someone. :wee:

Sony finally launches the PS2 in Brazil! For only $461!

We don't live in Brazil, but from what we hear, it's not one of the most gamer-friendly places out there. Piracy runs rampant and whenever any kind of controversial game releases, citizens usually find their government won't let 'em play it. But, hey, things are kinda looking up!

Reader Renato wrote in to us saying the PS2 has finally officially released in Brazil and that consumers can get it from the Sony Style store now ... for the low, low price of 799 BRL (about 461 USD). That's right, Brazilians no longer need secure safe passage for emigrating consoles or pay ridiculous sums of money to third-party distributors and can instead pay ridiculous sums of money directly to Sony for a locally-supported PS2! Isn't that awesome?

A chemistry student has been found dead with his jaw blown off by what is believed to be exploding chewing gum, reports have said.

The student apparently had a bizarre habit of chewing gum after dipping it into citric acid, Russian news agency Ria Novosti said.

Officers found both citric acid packets and a similar-looking unidentified substance, believed to be some kind of explosive material, on a table near the body, the agency continued.

Investigators suspect that the student simply confused the packets and put gum covered with explosive material into his mouth.
