how can u rename your profile to something different

You should be able to simply rename your profile folder found in this path:
.../Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles.
However, there is always a chance it could possibly corrupt your mpdata. Try it at your own risk.

If what you really want is just to change your multi-player name, however, you can do that easily in Multiplayer Options.

You want to go into ...call of duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles. In the profiles folder you will see a folder with your name on it. You rename it.

THEN, you need to go into the folder you JUST renamed and open config.cfg in notepad or wordpad. Go to EDIT>>SEARCH and search for your old name and change it to your new name. Save your changes.

You want to look for;

seta sv_lastsavegame

That way you can play your saved game again.

EDIT: Whiskey replied as well, but I dont think that will let you recover your saved games.

I just opened the console and typed:

name Cantina=VIII=

That's the same as changing it under multi-player options. Your actual profile name really doesn't matter for anything important.
